I have a MTH "scale" Milw. Rd GP-9 at 14 3/4" long and 3 3/4" high. Williams has a dummy "scale" Milw Rd GP-9 at 13" long and 4" high. I thought I could get one of the Williams and run a multiple unit train. Doesn't 7 feet difference (1 3/4" O scale), seems like a lot? Does Williams measure coupler to coupler or front to rear railing? Or, am I being too picky?

The 1/4" (1 foot) height difference is probably in the trucks and not the body.

The difference in the length of the engine really looks wrong IMO.  I have a RailKing F3 that is 2" (8 scale feet) too short and to me it is noticeable.

I have an Atlas/MTH hybrid GP9 and a Lionel Legacy GP9 and there's not hardly any differences in the dimensions.  The Lionel GP9 runs great as does the Atlas/MTH hybrid .  The Atlas GP9 was originally an unpowered unit that I powered using the PS2 guts from the RailKing F3.  The MTH motors fit just fine on the Atlas trucks.

I wouldn't believe anything Williams says about "scale." Williams products are engineered to a price point. They represent good value for money if that is what you are looking for, but they are long gone from any serious contention in the scale market. Back in the day Williams imported some nice brass scale items, but now, the best you could say for their "scale" items is that they are in the ballpark and closer to scale size than to traditional size. In any case, it is seldom a good idea to MU diesels from different manufacturers due to different paint shades and ride heights. Ditto for passenger cars - Lionel and MTH use completely different shades of Milwaukee orange and maroon and the cars and locomotives do not play well together.
