I am in the process of converting all engines to the fixed pilot, full length rails versions for 3RS... it is worth it. I've been able to make a pilot filler, make new handrails, and a pattern I use for drilling holes in the pilot to line up with the holes in the body to secure the pilot. There are small holes for the kadee couplers you can also use with a #2 sheet metal screw.

 

take a look. I also made a cover plate that goes around the draft box to cover any unwanted "holes" where the 3-rail coupler went. The handrails are .025 brass wire from Tichy Train Group that I formed using another 2-rail loco I own as a guide. These look great compared to the 3-rail versions....

 

The gap is 4mm between the bottom of the frame to the top of the pilot. (distance between each step on pilot)

 

It does take time to do, but worth it. I've done 8 so far... on this particular unit I also added cab window shades that I made and filler between the top of the truck to the frame.

There's another way. You buy the two-rail version which already has the scale handrails and fixed pilots and then you buy the hi-rail wheelset.

 

I actually was on the way to do this. I purchased the Heritage version of the SC-70ace with the 2-rail option with the full intention of buying the 3-rail wheelsets, but when the engine came in I was unhappy about the quality. The sun-visor was broken off and the diamond-plate tread on the running boards was buckling. I tried running it with the scale wheels, but it didn't like going through the Ross switches. The wheels worked fine on the non-switch Ross track.

 

When the engine came back from MTH, it was actually worse than when it left so I returned it to the train dealer and paid more money and bought the four unit A-B-B-A Norfolk-Southern F3 reincarnation of their business train excursion engine. This engine too had quality problems with paint blistering. I again sent it back to MTH, but this time it came back fixed.

 

While I'm not in the market right now, I may try this again someday since I really don't like swinging pilots. On my track diameters, I don't need them and they're a distraction.
