Ok guys I am tired of leaving all my trains in the boxes...

Its time to display 'em! I have some simple existing shelves to display my Dad's American Flyer Trains but now I am into 3 rail O its time to display these in another room. The shelves are too small for O.

Plus these did not have the following which I would like to improve upon:

1) Easy access for on/off handling of engines to the layout

2) Glass enclosure to reduce the dust

3) Floor to ceiling size maybe to fit as many engines as possible

4) Robust enough to support some heavy engines.

Well those are some ideas but not a must .... So show us your Display Shelves!

Right under the front edge of the layout. Each shelf is lit up with an LED strip powered by 12VDC and dimmable.

They look like built ins for the wall, but also support the lower level of track on the layout.

Just shelving with an "eyeball" light in the ceiling to flood the area.

Where did you get the display cases in the first posted photo of yours? I like that they are protected by the sliding clear doors.

They were custom made for us many years ago by a cabinet shop tenant that was going out of business and short on rent the final month. The only issue was the slider on the bottom of the glass is rather large and obscures the drivers of the locomotives on the bottom. An acceptable tradeoff for keeping the locos dust-free.

Then again, the rest of us are still playing with toy trains.

(And I'm the one with a "Chronicles of Narnia" poster in my cubicle at work).

Not sure how you got Star Wars, it's actually a sports border. I'm also not sure why it's even a sports border, I was never good at sports. Will have to ask dad next time I see him

I've mentioned this display case source multiple times in the past.  Most of my cases (I'll take some photos) came from them.  All were reasonably priced and shipping is free (beautifully packed, too).  All the wall-mounted units have acrylic sliding doors and the table-top units have acrylic covers.  Dust and I are not friends!

I bought a pair of these glass door bookcases and they worked out great.

Each shelf accommodates  some shop made stair-step risers so that each shelf has three levels. By doing this each shelf can accept three widths of O gauge Fastrack front-to-back with a length of 32 inches for each track.

That makes each shelf hold 96 inches of track and the whole case adds up to 48 feet of track. You can store a lot of trains on 48 feet of track.

At over $300.00 per case they are pricey but they are:

1. Pre-finished...2 colors available

2. Very sturdy...brackets at the top secure the case to the wall.

3. Can be re-purposed at a later time if need be

4. Most of all GLASS DOORS = NO MORE DUST!

5. with both doors open there is no center post to block access.

I also model S gauge and the S gauge case can accommodate 4 track widths per shelf so that case yields an amazing 64 feet of track length.

My shelves range to simple pine boards nailed together to custom made cabinets and commercial display fixtures...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Ward Kimball in California have some sort of protection from earthquakes built into his shelves? I vaguely recall him saying something about earthquakes in one of the TM videos.

Not a terrific picture, but here's the display I just finished putting up in my son's room. Nothing but good things to say about Glen Snyder shelving, by the way.

This is almost every Chessie locomotive made by Lionel, Williams, and K-Line.  A few items are on the layout (GP30, some K-Line switchers), and my GP35 hasn't arrived yet.  Also some C&O steam, two Polar Railroad locomotives, a Hershey steam and a custom Hershey GP7 I made, and three M&StL locomotives on the dresser.  Four Erie Lackawanna locomotives are on my layout.

That's all of it; I have room for no more than 1-2 additional locomotives between this and the layout, and I have an aversion to things being in boxes, so if anything else needs to come in, something has to go out!

I made the shelves from finished 1 x 4 pine with 1/4 round trim, to keep the trains on the shelves.  That was easier than routing (no table saw).

GNK-

These glass covered shelves look great, these were made by the Little Show Case Factory? I could not find 0 scale versions on their website.

How hard were these to install?

Yes, the Glenn Snyder has a satin finish.  If you want the stops or end caps, they do cost a bit extra--not much.

When drilling the holes in the shelves, I found I needed to use a bit that was one size larger than what was recommended, but other than that, no problems.  Except for my wall not being exactly straight; had to throw a washer behind a couple of them.

Shipping from NY to FL was a hefty ~$35, but eight shelves can be shipped in one cylinder.

I prefer the Dechants shelves because the track are recessed, This allows to set trains on the shelf with one hand and steam locomotives are positioned a lot easier.

Also the trains are more stable sitting into the shelf.

The downside is they come in four foot lengths but can be fastened together.

To save on shipping from Glenn Snyder pick up the shelving at the York Eastern TCA meet.  If you can't make it John, some going from the D3R club can pick it up for you.

I have not heard of any Rail Rax shipping in the last few years.  Their web sit is still up thou.  The family may have gotten it going again.  It may cost more shipping it from California.

Dan

I am attaching photos of 3 of my shelf varieties.

1.  Custom made oak  8 foot by 81 inch with plexiglass covers mounted on tracks. Unfortunately I didn't put in double tracks so the glass does not slide.

2   Shelves made by my good friend Jim Storer.  Note double shelves for maximum

storage capacity.  Plexiglass doors slide.

3.  Commercial shelves made by Greenway products, Ligonier PA. Great value for the money, but limited to UPS shipping specifications unless special arrangements are made to ship by truck.
