I know a lot of threads on smoke units.  I also know you will need to rebuild and/or have them serviced sometime in their life.    My question is how long should a various type of smoke unit last?   I have a 2013 Lionel Legacy GP-35 that is a great smoker but new last November.   My 2009 Lionel Legacy S-2 - won't smoke at all any more.   My 2004 Atlas RS-1 is a decent smoker - pretty basic smoke.    I have a K-line RS-3 that smokes so strong you can't run it long with the smoke on and that is over 6 years old.      I am leaning to turning them all off and maybe just run one now and then to show visitors.    But should I expect 3 to 4 good years out of a smoke unit in a new Lionel Legacy diesel smoke unit ran say 10 to 20 hours a week??  What results are others getting long term?

Provided you don't burn out the wicking, a smoke unit should run for many years. Some parts, such as wicking and elements may wear out in time, the same is true of the motor, but all of these are easily replaceable at minimal cost. If I were you, I would not lose any sleep worrying about them.

I don't think any one has run the empirical data to know.  Run it once without smoke fluid and you will have some burned wick and a heating element that is over heated.   Does that reduce the life?  Sure, but how much.  Don't know.  I am with Nicole on this one.  Treat it right ad it should last a long time.  G

Two smoke units failures because of negligence, and no failures because reaching a life span.

Two smoke units in my roster of steam engines have required the replacement of their fan motors because over-filling the smoke fluid reservoirs enabled smoke fluid to get into the fan motors.

Here's a tip. When you ship or store a locomotive with a smoke unit in its box, be sure to empty the smoke fluid reservoir.
