I have several older tmcc locs that use the 8057 smoke unit. I've done the general updates... remove resistor sleeve, replace wicking , enlarge air hole. In a conversation with Mike Reagan, he made one more suggestion to really kick things up a notch. He suggested replacing the old ceramic 27 ohm resistor with the current version of the 27 ohm resistor. Apparently the old ceramic resistors do not perform anywhere near as well as the current version. So I ordered a few replacements. Put them in and it's a night and day difference. No need for a lower ohm resistor, no need for an ac regulator with 8 ohm resistors. Such a simple change and only $2 per resistor! I've included a pic of the two. the part number for the new 27 ohm resistor is 600-8141-055. If you want a simple cost effective upgrade, give it a try. I was surprised at the difference.
