Try http://ittproducts.com/; they have all sorts of sound modules, and you can sample them as well.

Does anyone have something that you can record your own sounds in?
What you are looking for are called recordable sound modules. They are similar to what are used in greeting cards. Radio Shack used to offer one for about $10 - $13 but it has been discontinued, but can still be found in the back corners of some stores. Otherwise try an online search.

Don't forget to consider video game modding sites. Depending on the severity of the mod they may have an assortment of sound effects to choose from.
A few years ago you could go to QSI web site and download machinery, pumps, welding, electric motors and other sounds. Now they have changed everything. There are Ambient sound sites out there you just have to do a little digging. I found this one which has some decent Ambient sound files you can down load.

WOW Really quick responses! Thanks for all your suggestions!
I Google 'free sounds download' and found all I needed last year. I then downloaded the sounds onto chips. I did cat meows, dogs and even crickets. The chips came from ebay for under $5.
I use sounddogs.

Type in the title sounds you want like, TRAINS, CRICKETS, BIRDS, FREIGHT YARDS, NYC SUBWAYS, you get the idea.
Place the mouse over preview to hear and sample.
I have recorded squealing brakes, rails, coupler slack, passing trains or diesels, crickets, distant horns, station chatter, freight yard bangs with switching, cars, traffic, flying jets overhead and the list is endless.
Pages of any real sounds you want are available there.
