source for gear casting

Do the gears have to be metal?  Plastic is much easier.  How small is small? How big is big?

I thought MicroMark had an assortment of plastic gears, but I can't find them at their website? I will look around for a catalog as I believe that is where I had seen them. Since you mentioned a 3d printer I am guessing that plastic is ok?

Also for 3d printing there are places like Shapeways where people post their designs and you can have them printed for a small fee. You might find something there as well?

plastic is fine, its for looks it is not functional. the ones i have seen at micromark and other places were primarily for robotics or working models and the dont look like old gears did.  i have used these and modified them to look more period correct. it would be nice to have a 12" (1/4"), 24" (1/2"), and 36 or 48" (3/4, 1").   

What I had seen at Micromark was for casting resin they showed a bunch of gears as examples. I had never read the description before, just looked at the pictures. Sorry that wasn't what I thought it was.

Maybe the Shapeways type places online  would be worth a try? There have been a couple of folks here that have made some nice looking stuff with 3d printers. Maybe one of those folks could help you with the gears? I believe AlanRail was one of the forum members I remember posting 3d printing designs, but I haven't seen him post anything for a while now.

Our local electronics hobby shop, Jaycar has a good selection of gears for robotics hobbyists.

This picture was sent to me recently. Except for the motors and axles, this entire truck was made on a 3-D printer.  You do need to know how to design and draw the part. The advantage to 3-D printing is that you can make only exactly what you need rather than rummaging through a junk box trying to find compatible parts. I believe that these are 33" wheels and a 6' wheel base.  There is a a variety of side frames that can be used to finish the truck.  This is in 1 to 32 scale.  

not sure this pic came thru right but this is style gear im lookin for. i actually found a number of perfect ones listed on etsy as steampunk gears but they r all thin i guess primarily made for jewelry etc. just seems like perfect thing for some of our vendors to pick and provide. not only for machines like i am using them but also as "junk" around the factory.

for this particular project i need 8 - 48" (1"), 4 - 24" (1/2") and 12 -12" (1/4"). the 1/4" gears r really pinions to drive the other gears and i can improvise if necessary on those its the other gears that take a lot of work.

Have you checked out  www.crowriverproducts.com

They offer a lot of industrial type castings. Click on 1/4 scale and these are in their pewter offerings. They give the measurement for the large gear of 1 1/4.

hey guys more great inputs. i cant believe i forgot to  check crow river and i have even purchased stuff from them before.  i think their gearset will work fine. thanks again for everyones help!
