Good evening everyone,

I always loved the looks of this engine and always wanted one.  About a week ago, I was talking to my good friend and fellow forum member, Mike R. about this engine and he told me that it was featured already, one catalog prior to this one. I asked him if he was sure and he challenged me to go look at the catalog.  Needless to say, it was there.  I don't know how I missed it, but I did so  I called my dealer to try to get one.  He told me he has been out of them for a while now and I begged him to try and find one for me.  I received a phone call two days ago from my dealer.  He found one for me at a great price and I couldn't be happier.   This morning the door bell rang and it was the UPS delivery man with the engine.  I immediately took it down to the train room and away we went. What a great looking and awesome sounding engine.  The whistle is incredible and the detail on this engine is great. The only thing I wish it had was a light in the rear of the tender.  Here's a video and a few photo's of her.

Thanks for looking and enjoy.

Alex          The correct passenger car's are on order

Very nice - I am glad you got it.  I think they have become hard to find.

  Your video looks great.

I ordered one when the catalog first came out and was very happy with the loco when I recieved it.  I did something you will probably thing is sacrilege but I repainted mine in a half flat/half satin black as a Union Pacific loco (you see, I wanted that particuarly Pacific, not necessarily that paint scheme.)  It is a great runner and I really like it and all its features.

Incidently, if you look at the page the Souterhn Crescent is on it is there with the Blue Comet.  Quite interesting, the Blue Comet is not the same casting as the Southern Crescent but about 3/4 inch longer loco - I had assumed that all three (including the Alton) would be the same casting since that is now Lionel usually does it.  Still overall the BC is not that long because it is paired with maybe the smallest tender this side of the slopeback paired with the 0-4-0 shifter.

Alex,

That's a good looking engine. Looks a lot better than I thought it would. The sounds are awesome as well.

I told you it was in that catalog. Lol! I'm very happy you found one. Especially since you were so disappointed when the dealer didn't have any left. But he came through in the end like he always does.

Enjoy and runs the wheels off it.

Mike R

Ps... Those are the wrong cars. Lol!!! GET DOWN NORTON!!!

Thanks, Roger, Lee,Sunrise,Doug,Bill,Mike,Jeff,Patrick,Dewey,Sean, for the kind words

Lee, Lets see some photo's of the repaint.

Sunrise, try to fine one it's an awesome engine.

Doug, yes awesome sound.

Bill, it was a must have.

Mike, thanks for finding it for me.

Jeff, I agree one of the best whistles I ever heard.

Mikado 4501, glad you're getting one.

Patrick, That picture has been hanging there before the layout was up, I just about built the whole layout around it. LOL

Dewey,thanks.

Sean, You heard the bark from the exhaust also, Try to get one it's awesome.

Thanks to all again, Alex

I agree that this loco has very impressive detail.  The reason I bought it to repaint is all of that "added on equippment" - the prototype had a lot of pipes/tanks/stuff hung off it everywhere,  which (particualry when repainted simple black and weathered just a tiny bit) gave it a very industrial, workhorse engine look, which I wanted.  Lionel did a superb job with all this, this loco just has as much or more "separately applied parts" as I have seen, all of them very nicely render and put on true and straight.  It is one toy train that fully justifies the word "model."

The sound is also good, noticeably, if only a bit, better than on my Blue Comet, which I think is entirely due to the later having such a tiny tender - probably not as much resonance room in that.  And the whistle is one of my favorites, not up there with the MTH French 241.A, but among the best US steam whistles I have.

Alex, I felt the same way about the absence of tender lights on this model so decided to add some to mine. I know these are probably not the prototypical lights but I really like how it turned out. I want to thank fellow forum member Jeff (a.k.a. pennsy484) for his help in sending me some photos of the inside of his Lionel Legacy K-4 tender (similar electronic boards and set up). The photos helped me figure out where to wire the lights into the boards. As stated by others, this is a great locomotive with great sound and a lot of fun to run!

Nice job with the lights. When are you gonna weather the #1396 for realism with full blown greasy soot and a little touch of SIRT's rust?

Thank you! I had a lot of fun doing it and am happy with the way it turned out. While I have a lot of appreciation for the talent around here when it comes to creating realism in their train layouts and models, I don't think I'll be weathering any models in the near future.

TRK, that looks awesome, I thank you for posting the photo's. I just saw Jeff at Trainstock he is a great guy. TRK can you tell me how you hooked up the lights and which lights you ordered, I would love to do the same thing.

Thanks, Alex

Thanks Alex! I'd be happy to send you a PM with the parts I ordered and how I did it. Again, I couldn't have done it without Jeff's help and his photos.
