This brings back memories.  Not from the Santa fe specifically, but driving back from Hesperia and coming down the El Cajon pass.  Spent many days trackside with dad along there watching the trains wind through.  Also, living in central AZ, we have lots of rail line that looks similar.  Little to no vegetation and lots of dirt.   We do have saguaro though.
Forgot to add.  I don't know what they would be called here, but Easter Eggs are what they're called in computer world.  Little things that don't belong but most don't even see.   I think I saw a picture somewhere of a layout that had some zombies on it.  Most people would probably have never even noticed them.  Pretty much looked like part of the rest of the scenery. But when you look really close......
