GREAT NEW YORK STATE MODEL TRAIN FAIR CELEBRATES 39th YEAR

That indescribable magnetism that draws man to machine extends itself to miniatures of the real thing when the Great New York State Model Train Fair rolls into the Empire Expo Center/New York State Fairgrounds for the 39th year on November 2 and 3. The show runs from 10 to 5 Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday.

It is one of the largest events of its kind in the Northeast. The Model Train Fair typically draws nearly 10,000 people every year. While most come from Central New York, visitors also come from other parts of New York State, southeast Ontario, Pennsylvania, and New England.  Model trains are often on people’s minds this time of year in anticipation of Christmas. November is also “National Model Railroad Month." The Model Train Fair attracts young and old; men and women, who come to marvel at miniature versions of prototype trains; learn how to build model railroads; or shop for collectibles or products to enhance their own model worlds.

The Model Train Fair fills 90,000 square feet of exhibit space in the Empire Expo Center's largest building  -- The Exhibit Center. More than 30 operating model railroad layouts are on display, and more than 100 vendors bring model railroad-related products to sell.

Expected to be a big draw at this year's Model Train Fair is the visit of Thomas the Tank Engine from the popular books and videos of the same title. Thomas is being brought to Syracuse by WCNY-TV so area children can meet and be photographed with the icon.

Another attraction making a repeat appearance is the "Roaming Railroad," a trackless train coming from Connecticut.  Visitors can board the Roaming Railroad train in front of The Exhibit Center for a ride around the fairgrounds.

At the Model Train Fair, one quickly learns that there are many aspects to the hobby. There are multiple scales on display -- from the tiny 1:160 N-scale, which can fit in the palm of a hand,  to 1½ inch gauge trains on which people ride. One of the most prevalent scales is HO at 1:87 scale. Lionel-size "O"  scale (1:48) is amongst the most popular. But you also discover that interests vary from the realistic "model" railroads to the "tinplate" high-rail. There are collectors, and there are operators. Some people incorporate elaborate scenery; others just like to lay track and watch trains go by.

The annual Model Train Fair is sponsored by the Central New York Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, a volunteer non-profit educational and historical organization. The Model Train Fair is one the group's largest fund raisers. Proceeds help ongoing restoration projects at the Chapter's Martisco Station  Museum (located between Camillus and Marcellus), the Central Square Station Museum, and historic railroad cars at the state fairgrounds.

BEST TELEVISION and PHOTO COVERAGE is on SATURDAY NOV. 2. News media may also arrange interviews, photo shoots, or television coverage before the show begins by contacting Jeff Paston at 382-7942.  News personnel are always welcome during show hours to cover the event.

Prior to the show, best coverage opportunity is Friday afternoon/evening, Nov. 1. Exhibitors will be setting up displays, some of which should be operational.  We can also arrange an interview with appropriate background earlier in the day if desired.

Be sure to stop by my booth...I will have some extra special blowout sale items and will have some new releases hot off the "Lionel" truck coming in tomorrow.  If you're just looking, that's ok too just be sure to say hi!  I will be at the show registration/office table next to my store booth.

-PS> I expect to have a refurbished ZW or two along with some other transformer models.  Completely serviced and LIKE NEW, including a store service warranty.

Oh so ready!

I'll be there Sunday to run trains from noon to close.  I'm thinking about going early and having an open session on weathering trains, where I can demonstrate my lack of knowledge on the subject.  I have to start some where.

Anyone that can make it, come for our HUGE 80' x 60' L-SHAPED O GUAGE LAYOUT, where for the first time, we (The CNY-NRHS O-Scalers) are combining with the Flower City TT club!

THANKS!

-Mario

I went to the Syracuse train show today (Saturday) with my wife, and can strongly recommend it if you can make it there tomorrow, Sunday 11/3.  The crowd was larger that I can remember it being in past years.  Lots of vendors - if you check them out you can find some good deals on rolling stock.  There wany operating displays of all scales. The show is particularly popular with kids (who get in free) - there are several kid height displays and, best of all, you can get your picture taken with none other than Thomas himself.  Kudos to Phil (Wurlitzer) and all the members of the Central NY Chapter of the NRHS for another fine job!

Jim

Went Sunday, great show and crowd, got to meet Popi, great to meet him, very nice man and great display! Lots of great deals all over the place, didn't buy anything because I'm still putting my money into building my layout this year, hopefully next year I can buy stuff to run. If you didn't get there this year try to make it next year.

The Great New York State Train Fair

for 2014 is again scheduled at the

NYS fairgrounds. And as I understand

it they are trying either move into

another building and/or again have 2

buildings available for dealers and exhibitors.

There was a waiting list this year, because

so many applied to sell and/or display at the show.

If you plan on selling and/or displaying, get your application

in early. First come first served.

Hope to see all at the Fulton show this Sat and Sun.
