Hi Guys and Girls...

About the middle of this past week, I finished the track work for the "EL" in the city. There are almost 45 feet up and running. I took quite a few photos this morning as the sun came in through the east windows. Made for some interesting shots. I haven't decided if I am going to add railings at this point. Perhaps I will do so in certain areas. Of course I have detailing to do including making the foam core base look more like wood. The first few pictures below I tried to produce a early morning foggy look...Hope you enjoy and as always I appreciate you taking time to look!

Thanks,
Alan

Alan, these are really great!! I can virtually hear those trains rumbling over the streets just like when I was a kid in NYC and Brooklyn. I probably missed the post at some earlier point, but I'd love to know what you used for all the structural elements of the "EL." Everything looks very realistic and first-rate. Thanks, Alan.

Thanks guys!!

Jack...I am not even close to being done. This is just an update thus the title of the thread. I have over 300 vehicles on the layout of all eras and I do agree that I need to arrange them in 10 year or so groups. I just wanted to get them out of their boxes and populate the streets for the pictures. I have started to put drivers in them...first the easy ones like the drop tops.

Jerrman...The components are a mixture of plastic, wood, and foam core. The plastic and wood pieces were cut out using a CNC machine. The pattern was based on early elevated structure. The groove at the top of the truss beam was planned to attach walkways but now I am not sure I will be installing them...at least not everywhere.

Alan;

As another NYC boy, born and raise, I remember the El trains very well. You've done a fantastic job of capturing the look and feel of Manhattan in the 40's & 50's.
If you were modeling the old Third Ave El, the only thing missing would be the trolley/street car tracks that ran underneath the El.
Thanks for bringing back a fond childhood memory.
Al...from what I understand, I already have reservations with the "guy upstairs"!! I sure hope there are model trains to play with up there! Big Grin

Eliot, Jim P, and Chuck...compliments from guys that come from "EL" country means a lot!! I have never been fortunate enough to see the Third Avenue El in New York...just old pictures, etc. to go by so I thank you for appreciating what I am trying to do.

Skip, FCMR, Dave, yardlet, John, Keith, J Daddy....thanks for the encouragement!! I enjoy your posts too!!

B+M Fan...Yeah, the whole project was funded by the only tax payer in town..ME!! Wink

Alex...I will be sure to have the company photographer in my pocket when we visit!! Big Grin By the way, I went back to the old camera...the new one takes awful pictures...it is probably me so I have to figure out what I am doing wrong..

Brian...thanks!! That is exactly how I feel about your pictures..always a pleasure to see them.

Jim R...thanks so very much! After losing my local guy that could cut out components for me, I appreciated you taking the time to make additional supports/legs for my project by matching as closely as possible the ones I already had. If you wouldn't have done that for me, this project would have never gotten completed!!

Keith...Thanks! I took the picture of Mid-town for you my friend...I knew you would like it. Great Lionel colors and one of my favorites!!

J Daddy...get that Michigan bunch together and come on down. There are plenty of trains to run!!

Alan.
You are very welcome.

Peter....thanks!...I am glad that the scenes bring back those memories!!

Michael...appreciate the compliment... Some of the cars are parked but many are going down the street. I have drivers in about 10 percent of them now but need many more!! Just don't know where to get a couple of hundred sitting people that have arms that can be adjusted to look like they are driving. Any suggestions are certainly welcome!!

Thanks,
Alan
