Of course O gauge periods are arbitrary, and far too often just repeated by rote. So .to begin a thoughtful reevaluation:

1900-1951: JLC defines electric toy trains, transitions Standard Gauge tinplate to 3 rail O gauge die cast. Markets trains as synonymous with Christmas

1951-1959: the Post War ll basement glory years.

1959-1969: Roy Cohn, the first contraction begins, & culminates at Woodstock (regardless of whether you were there or not).

1969-1985: the era of plastic.

1985-1995: Richard Kughn shows that sparks under those rollers are still possible

1995-2005: The rise of the importers, Wunderkinds, forums, hobby magazines and locomotives, rolling stock & operating accessories never seen before. The general enthusiast discovers that York is more than just a Harley factory & the Internet changes everything.

2005-2009: Burnouts, law suits, the rise of Chinese production dominance. We have seen the future of O gauge trains & it is an obsolete. burned out circuit board.

2009-Present: The domestic O gauge market fragments and the post 1990 Renaissance fades. The second equipment market contraction begins. Building, creating & actually playing with trains once again defines the hobby and the uber clubs & layouts show the way ..
