I just rearranged my town to accept the nice Woodland Scenics buildings;  sliced up the MTH modern Sinclair Gas station to reduce the garage to a single stall.  In the process, I decided to get rid of any accessories that I purchased that I have no room for on the layout.  I was about to sell the Lionel Aquarium, MTH Greyhound Bus Station and the Rotary Coal Tipple.  Then it struck me. I own the air-rights over my track yards.

So I now have a plan to construct an over-track structure for the aquarium ( with a siding, parking lot and road ramp tie in to the town) and I found an unused elevated spur for the tipple.

I guess I think a bit more before I sell the other accessories!

Nothing like 3-D thinking!!  If you look closely at my layout, the city areas that I wanted so badly but knew would completely take up my space, are elevated above the mainlines.  I was then able to include many structures and accessories I didn't think I could.  By making the second levels look like huge support structures for the city buildings, etc. it all came together just fine....  Glad you didn't have to give up items you really wanted.  The coal tipple is something I would love to have!!

I think operating accessories are wonderful and fun but when I was planning my "hi-rail" layout, they just did not seem to fit.  I created a platform about 15 inches off the floor that is about 18 inches wide by 12 feet long.  I painted is black and lined it with working accessories leaving room in front for a two lane road.  The kids love it as they can run cars and play with the accessories on their own level.  Adults can stand back a little and also watch the accessories.  There are still some operating accessories on the layout but they tend to be the more realistic ones with smaller footprint while things like the MTH fire station, gas station, car wash, Lionel hobby shop, Ford dealership, saw mill, culver unloader, barrel loader and icing station.

I am very please with the way it has turned out.

Happy railroading,

Don
