I am thinking of changing my layouts tubular track to a more realistic flat rail track. I have heard that many track manufactures have different specifications in measuring the radius/ diameter of their track. What realistic flat rail track is the same or closest footprint to tubular Lionel track ?. I am using 072 and 042 gauge track.

I have used most diameters of Atlas O curved track with nickel silver rail. As close as I can measure and calculate, the diameter at the center rail corresponds to the track specification. 0-54 track has a 54-inch diameter at the center rail. However, they make O-36 and O-45, but I don't think they make O-42.

Atlas O45 inner, O54 outer. The pre-formed curves are every 9 inches. O27, O36, O45, O54, O63, O72, O81, O90, etc.
About 4.5" track center to center. Atlas flex track is very difficult to use. IMO.
