UP Forty-Niner questions

The MTH Railking version is about 10% smaller than the scale Weaver version. The Weaver version is TMCC controlled. MTH made 2 railking versions, one with Protosounds2 and a earlier Protosound1. I think the later is missing some painting detail that was there on the first. The Weaver version has red painted driver and tender rims not painted on the MTH version. Also on the front grill, Weavers has a seperate piece and MTH's version is painted on. And of course, Weaver's is brass. MTH die cast metal. MTH made a two-tone gray 60' passenger car set to go with the engine. The Weaver version uses a Seuthe smoke generator, but MTH wins in the smoke output dept.

I believe that the MTH version is semi scale and the Weaver is brass and full scale. The cars that best go with it would be yellow or two tone grey Union Pacific and Southern Pacific cars. There was not a set of special cars that matched the paint scheme of the engine for real. That is fiction made by the MTH / Weaver to sell more models of the engine.

 

Thanks Chuck. That is helpful info. I've seen some MTH ps1 versions for sale at times but not the ps2 or Weaver. Not sure where to find them but it will be on my York list in the fall if we don't find one before. How about passenger car ideas, what looks good?

The MTH/Railking version is "traditional sized" meaning compressed scale to enable running on traditional O gauge track.The locomotive and tender are die cast.There is a whistle only,PS1 and a later PS2 version(I believe was produced).

 

The Weaver 49er is full 1/4 scale and brass.(I have this locomotive).It came with and without a basic QSI sound package. I have had mine upgraded to MTH PS2.

 

I refer to her as my "rolling jukebox".The art deco styling and colors remind me of the WurliTzer juke boxes of that era. The UP also had a streamlined 4-8-2 with the same styling and colors for the 49er. I would really like to see this loco in O scale.

The consensus seems to be the Weaver is scale and the MTH is semi-scale which might be a better fit for our layout of mostly starter sets and traditional or semi-scale engines.

 

Anyone out there know where we can find one?

 

If you go with the scale weaver version I think M.Caruso has a matching passenger set for sale on the For Sale forum still.  I briefly considered them before going another direction.

Thanks Alan.  That looks like a nice one.  I am working with someone on purchasing the MTH version. 

Though not a UP fan, I have the MTH RK version. It is what I call "nice Railking";

the model is well done, not tiny, and they even bothered to put the Boxpok drivers

at the Main driver position, spoked elsewhere. This touch is not always done in

sub-scale. It runs well for PS1 (that is, no cruise control).

 

I like the shape of the loco, and I had a chance to grab another of the PS1 models for 

really, really cheap...it's been run more than a little, but is still sound, and due

for a custom freelance non-UP repaint someday. Probably black, with a few highlights.

 

I, too, would like to see the 4-8-2 version of this styling in affordable RK.

 

I've wondered why MTH has never offered this 49'er RK loco painted for the NYC Mercury -

perfectly proper RK thing to do, and the locos have very similar looks; the tender, also.

MTH has offered some far less convincing fantasy locomotive/paint schemes.
