Barry and gunrunnerjohn said all upgrade files are 3 volt files and I think Barry also said they're larger files (more memory reqd).

 

Some of the upgrade files don't show the 3 volt or 5 volt icon, but every one of the upgrade files I looked at were 3 volt.

 

George (GGG) said if you have a RailKing engine it's best to stick with a file that's for a RK engine.  I tend to agree, but there might be some that will work.

 

I downloaded 3 different Premier files for my RK 2-8-0 and the chuff/wheel rotation was out of sync and the only one that finally worked was a file for a RK engine.  The Premier file did have the generator spooling up sound, which I wanted, but the RK file I used does not.  I'm doing more searching because I installed marker lights and want to be able to turn them on/off.  Hopefully I can find a RK file that has the generator and marker lights.

 

I also looked at ONLY files for the 2-8-0, a file for some other wheel arrangement (like 2-8-2 or 4-8-2) may work, I just haven't tried them yet.

Joe,  The links Bob provided are the best and sometimes only way to search for documents and files.  The PS page is down.  The main page doesn't alway reflect documents that are available via the Service web page.

 

The best way to search is put in an engine description such as F-7, or 2-8-0 or 4-6-4.  Then on the left narrow your selections by Premier or RK, then Road name, etc....

 

File size varies and there are plenty of Upgrade files that use less then 1Meg.

 

You DO NOT have to use an upgrade file, any 3V file for the appropriate engine will work.

 

Many time when an update file is available it is a good choice, but sometimes a newer file for a recently produced engine is better, especially for custom installs where additional lights and features are used.

 

As an example, an upgrade to older PS-1 F-3, E-6, F-7 etc... usually have better sound files available with new production engines.  (Though the F-3 is one of the sound files I was able to get MTH to update to turn on the Number board lights as a DCS feature. (This allows Ditch Lights to remain on, and the Marker where functional).

 

Steam (Bob's example) where RK drivers are smaller then the Premier equivalent, is where sticking to like type is best.  Diesels are not as critical, as the wheel and gearing is similiar in most cases.

trouble right now is I'm changing one in a G gauge engine. The speed is off by about 2mph faster. The number board lights are flashing like the overhead beacon should. It's not lit.

 It would be great to see a list of what's enabled and on which function. Looks like I'll need to contact MTH and see if they can make me a G gauge GP30 file with overhead beacon flashing on #8-7. I've got the number boards on #8-1. It's not a mars light on the GP? Very difficult to switch these after a full mod.

Joe,  Did you use a beacon from the upgrade kit or your own light?  The beacon is an LED and polarity matters.

 

Sounds like the MARs function is on.  On some MTH diesels the number board lights are doubled up with the interior light.  3 bulbs on one circuit.  The FET is rated at about 1 amp so that does work.

 

Or if your not using ditch lights that is an alternative too.  The problem is they will flash when whistle blown, unless the sound file uses them for Number boards.  G
