If I understand how a fixed input on a TIU works you get the same voltage out that goes in. If you connected a transformer, say a Z4000, to the fixed inputs and used the transformer throttles to vary the voltage couldn't the fixed inputs be used as variable? If this is possible could the horn / whistle button on the transformer activate those features on a conventional locomotive?

I'm in the planning stages of a layout. I do not have the system yet but I will be wiring the layout for DCS. Most of my locomotives are conventional so I want to be able to run both conventional / Proto engines on any track ( not at the same time ). To start with, I am planning two seperate unconnected loops and a large yard. The plan was to   put each loop and the yard on it's own channel but if voltage cannot be adjusted through the fixed input then I would need a second TIU so I can have a third variable channel. That would leave me with two TIU's and four fixed inputs / outputs that aren't getting used. That sounds expensive for being able to use half a TIU. Is my understanding correct on this? Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Yse, however, this defeats the purpose of being able use a wireless throttle (the DCS Remote or the DCS App) to control conventional engines.

Yes, you could.

Why did you feel that you must use 3 channels? If you have toggle switches on each of your yard sidings, which you should do regardless, you can use the output of one variable channel to control one mainline loop, and the output of the other variable channel to control the second mainline loop, as well as the yard.

I do what you ask about.  I don’t have a ton of conventional, but with those I like to use the handles, personal preference.  I have two TIUs, 7 different TIU outputs, and only one is set to variable where I use the DCS remote to control track voltage, For my turntable area.  I get better slow speed control of the conventional set up this way, not sure why.  Also my old ZW gives me better slow speed then my ZWL, tried them both

Fot the other 6 outputs, all set to fixed, but just adjust the voltage to run conventional.

Barry, Thank you.

"Why did you feel that you must use 3 channels?"

Because this is my first foray into anything like command control and I am having a difficult time grasping "how much" track length or layout size the TIU or one of the TIU channels can handle. My layout isn't going to be huge by any means but until I get into the thick of things and see what the system can do I'm just guessing.

You did answer another question I was wondering about, putting two loops or a loop and the yard on one channel. I guess it's possible. Good news. Thanks again.
