I just took my "old rivets" Vision GG-1 out of the box and fired it up for the first time.  It seems fine, except I can't get the smoke to work.

I added 20 drops of fluid and blew down the hole a couple times.  I ensured the smoke button is in the "on" position.  In "Program" mode, I first "set" the engine number (to "48") and then pressed Aux and then "9" for the prototypical smoke effect.  I powered down, put it in "Run" and fired it up.  No smoke.  I repeated, but didn't power down between "Program" and "Run," as it doesn't say to power down between these steps in the manual.  Again, no smoke.  I tried the "R" function.  No smoke.  I deleted the engine from the Legacy remote and re-added the engine to the Legacy remote.  Put it in "run" (without doing the Aux and 9 step).  No smoke.  Usually smoke is automatic on Lionel engines as soon as they are added to the Legacy remote.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks.

MARTYE - thanks, your advice worked like a charm!  I knew I was doing something wrong.  I will say that I read the first "smoke" paragraph in the manual that says to press either 9 or +, but assumed that paragraph was mutually exclusive of the instructions for "more prototypical smoke operation," which I don't think mentions the + key.  Thanks again for the quick help.

I don't want to tempt providence, but at this point, I have a very nice, fully functional Vision GG-1.  As I had mentioned in my Amherst Train Show report, I had to eat crow. Weeks earlier, I said I would not buy this locomotive as I don't have a catenary system and think this locomotive would look silly on a layout without one.  But when I saw the "old rivets" version in-person, sitting next to the Tuscan red (non-rivets) MTH Premier version, I was amazed by how much the darker paint scheme with the rivets adds to the appearance.  In all fairness, I think the MTH version is technically a superior offering, given it is like half the price and an engineering marvel, with its functional pantographs (= can be electrified from a cat system).  But in the end, and completely outside my nature, I splurged and bought this thing on the spot.  The aesthetics are amazing.  The sound is awesome.  And, I unfortunately remain wary of MTH products (despite exclusively buying MTH products for our first few years in this hobby) because of all the frustrating nonsensical DCS faults and quirky engine performance.  All in all, at this point, I'm glad I went with the Vision version.
