From the Lionel repair manual:

"This tender has no exact prototype but incorporates distinctive features of several freight and switching locomotive tenders".

It is often referred to as a "Santa Fe" or "coffin" style tender in Lionel related literature.  You can see various elements of the tender on equipment used by a variety of railroads including the Pennsylvania, Great Northern, Santa Fe, etc.

Thanks for the info. Was wondering if it was just made up. I googled Santa Fe locomotive tenders and found one very similar except for oil and lot longer. For some reason it was bugging me that I couldn't fine a prototype for this tender (even though it's pulled by a Marx engine!). I feel a lot better about it now.  LOL

Yeah Dominic, that's a Marx loco. The 666 and the 1666 look too much like road power to use the relatively small Marx tenders. Plus most of my rolling stock is Lionel anyway.
