I just spent time going through Weaver catalogs 2001-2007 (couldn't find later until 2013, and was not going to do a PDF

download off their site for later), and prior versions, and it looks like in that period, only,  Weaver offered their Baldwin 2-8-0.  I was not rostering my current layout plan then, and, while interested, I let it go.  I have not seen those engines at Weaver at York or in recent catalogs.  I think one problem was that I thought later versions did not have the conventional option?, and, of course, most were for eastern roads, so I snoozed and lost.  I yelped when the WBB 2-8-0/2-8-2? was canceled but had completely forgotten about the Weaver 2-8-0.  The WBB tenwheeler with the Weaver 2-8-0 make branchline/shortline power fit to poke out of a sagging engine house.  (I was searching the Weaver site and auction site to see if they had made a tank car for companies I want, no, and got the engine reminder) Shoulda bid, but did not.  I just want to know if it was in those years (2001-2007) only..and not later.  I also found they did a Rio Grande 4-8-4 during that period.  Good thing I missed that...nice to have, but would be a doorstop on the helper siding.  Since they made a lot of these, at least for a lot of roads, and for 7? years, how do they run?

Mine runs just fine. The EOB takes some getting used to, since it has start up pauses and speed ramps up that are not expected. Occasionally while running, it just takes off at high speed, which is usually an indication of a failing tachometer sensor on the motor.

The only other quirk is that the rear drivers seem to waddle. They move forward and backwards at speed, or the rear axle "yaws" at speed. This does not affect the operation of the loco and does not cause the loco to wobble, it just looks funny if you notice it.

Other than those few things, it's a great little die cast loco with just enough detail to look good, but not so much as to be overly fragile.

I like mine. If it keeps taking off at high speed, I will put a Cruise Commander M in it.

Thanks, but I hope yours isn't typical.  I know NOTHING about these, but IF these engines have a plate on the bottom holding the axles on, I would want to take that off

and see what kind of bearing problem..worn/missing would cause drivers to move other than simply rotate.   If we were talking autos, I'd wonder if there are replaceable  bearings, or does it have to be "rebabbited"  or bearings fabricated.  Bent rods binding....??....And it depends on how much yours has run, or did it have those

problems out of the box?  (now that rear axle play wouldn't be built in to provide for

a tighter track radius. would it?)  Again the only place I've seeb these was at Weaver's

booth at York.

Mike CT:  I saw those Grand Canyon versons pictured in the last of the Weaver brochures, 2007?, that I could find with them offered.  I was wondering if any were offered later than that, like, still offered (I think not), but Weaver did/does custom work on them ...also shown were NY,O & W, liveries,  with two different tender letterings.

What I wanta hear is rave notices about them, like I heard about the WBB Casey Jones.

From the Weaver Archives.  My Grand Canyon model was 2006. If I remember correctly they were discounted significantly. $495 for TMCC.   I'm guessing.  There may have been a few with EOB speed control.  Two are missing 1806 and 1807, sorry.

Operation manual does list instructions for EOB.  Click to access the on line Weaver Manual.  You may want to contact Weaver they may be able to direct you to one of these models.
IMO one of the last straight TMCC models that I purchased, I installed EOB in an older 0-8-0 Weaver Yard Goat.  Difference is night and day.  Still a very nice display model, I have run it on my layout with good results.

Mine waddles and wobbles.  You can see the cab move up and down. The springs were replaced with stiffer ones from Weaver, but it didn't really help. Its also very jerky at low speeds and squeaks.  I replaced the motor and I've played with the EOB settings many times, and Weaver has had it twice.  The smoke unit had to be replaced and ever since it has not been synchronized.  Having said all that, it looks nice.  And the folks at Weaver are great.  I just wouldn't buy one unless you could run it first.

Does the Weaver 2-8-0 use the side rods for power transmission? Without tearing it apart it appears the 2nd set of drivers from the rear is driven by the worm gear and the rest is linkage.  Traction tires on the rear set of drivers. Two middle sets of drives are blind/no flange.   I could be wrong and often.  Mike

Thanks for the input...but I am disappointed in the gist I am getting.  It sounds like

the rods are binding and making these things hop along the track.  (have had that

problem with old Marx with bent side rods...the Marx can usually be fixed).  If somebody does take one apart, or removes the drive rods to view the effect, and verifies the problem, it will make an interesting post, for those owners and I, and maybe info on how not to engineer a model locomotive.

Practically everybody uses the rods to transmit power to the other drivers.  Lionel, MTH, 3rd Rail, all the other brass builders.  It's nothing new.  Same for HO and some S(American Models gears all their drivers on their steamers, the rods are only along for the ride.)

Now, if a driver's out of quarter, burrs in the rods or too much slop, that's another matter.
