Last Saturday I went to the Keystone Antique Truck and Tractor Museum for the train show. The River City Railers, VP&C, RANTrak, had their modular layouts on display. Last December my club in Roanoke became apart of this organization of model railroad clubs.

Something a bit different this week…I’ve Been Working on the Railroad…and other places on the layout too!

Anyhow, here are some photos I took of some of the more interesting O scale figures (many Arttista, but not all) I have on the layout set into various scenes on the railroad…

A welder cools off outside the East Altoona roundhouse:

Nearby, an engineer heads to his train:

Not far away in the diesel maintenance facility, we catch some workers taking a break:

IMG_1918IMG_1598

Heading east, here’s a fellow loading a truck with bags of grain at Goodman’s Feedmill in Port Royal:

Just up a few blocks away, a couple of guys in an alley unload a pickup truck and carry some items into the old Hotel Royal:

And four miles further east in Mifflintown, a railroad worker unloads a box car on the team track near Mifflin Interlocking:

IMG_2350

That’s it for this week. Now YOURS TRULY has to get to work around his own place…including doing some work on a model barn which will appear in a future edition of Weekend Photo Fun. Enjoy!

This past weekend, my club did a private one day only "Christmas in July" event in Mercer County, PA.  As we had lots of space, we decided to try a little experiment and put the yard and servicing facilities on the outside of the layout.  The main body of the layout was 52' x 20', and the yard added 30'+ to the layout, making it the largest one-day layout we've ever done, and to top it all off, there were only 5 of us at this event.  These photos were from setup on Friday night and last touches on Saturday morning.

And here is a short video of some the trains we were running:

This is just a copy and paste from the "What did you do on your layout" thread. But I figured the photos and layout progress was worthy of weekend photo fun. So I hope you all enjoy.

"Roughing in" of the first large mountain has been completed. I will start with some construction photos that shows the 2x4 supports/plywood supports along with the cardboard and foam pieces used to support between the gaps.

For tunnel liners, I used 1/2" fomular board wrapped in crumpled construction paper and painted with textured paint. I may come back with an air brush to make it a little more gray.

My layout "Stone Henge"

Then it was time to bring it all together by covering in crumpled builders paper from Home Depot. This paper will eventually be covered with plaster and rock molds, but will provide support and basic shaping for the completed mountain.

I spent the most time on this section. Three tracks, three tunnel portals, three different elevations. I still have some touch ups to do but I'm very happy with the result. The backdrop seam will eventually be covered by trees.

My "Money Shot" looks like a completely different layout after adding the mountain. The bridge piers were 3D printed by my friend Dave Lambert and the Atlas bridge sits on 3D printed bridge shoes.

I'm also really happy with how this section of the mountain turned out. I can see this being a favorite spot for photos once its covered in trees and ground cover.

Another 3D printed bridge pier made/design by my friend Dave. This should be another great photo/video spot.

All of this work was done just in time for Train-A-Palooza this past weekend, which is a gathering of friends from YouTube, Detroit 3 Railers, Forums, etc that I started about three years ago. We all met for a weekend of non-stop 3-Rail train running action. I hosted a Friday night gathering at my house and Greg Browning hosted the main event on Saturday. I'm sure you'll recognize many of the faces in the photo below so keep an eye out for their recap of the festivities.

Did you check Scott's pockets before he left.  I understand he's had year of practice hiding trains on his person by trying to get them in the house without his wife seeing.

Here in Pennsylvania, or Pretzelvania to be more precise, the sweltering heat and humidity have ordinary folks doing things they normally wouldn't, though in this woman's case some sun is much needed as she's "white as a ghost." Too bad it's near sundown; of course, she likely would get roasted on the roof during the day. Note the real estate appraiser on the far building...it seems his camera has strayed a bit off his subject property.

On a hot July day in 1949 a Pennsy Q1 is heading an express to Chicago.

I really like this engine's unique wheel arrangement.

I normally use my phone for video, but I tried my Nikon D5600 this time plus a new tripod.  I have had the Nikon for years, but rarely use the video function.  Videos came out dark so I need to experiment more on the camera's settings.

Lastly, I've been slowly completing the Hap Hazard Packing Company (from Brennan's Model Railroads)........the walls are going up!

I will start on the 2nd floor and hope to have that done by Sunday Scenic Showcase.....

Peter

Peter Iv had that kit since Dennis introduced it at York. So I’ve had it a long time. When I get my Engine House done I will probably start on it. Anyway Nice job so far.

I can see this being a favorite spot for photos once it’s covered in trees and ground cover.

Another 3D printed bridge pier made/design by my friend Dave. This should be another great photo/video spot.

You’ve done a great job highlighting the steps to build your mountain. You are most certainly not a disservice to our hobby. Keep up the good work.

I updated my display space in the house a few weeks back to highlight my 4-4-0s.

These are all Lionel made, and near as I can tell, built to scale.

Left to right, Central Pacific RR no. 60, the "Jupiter," Union Pacific RR no 119, and CC&C RR "Nashville." Nashville is the Lincoln Funeral Train locomotive.

IMG_2950

I normally display two trains on this chest, but wanted to show all of the 1800s steamers that I own. So I laid a third track down.  No golden spikes were used in the filming of these photos.

IMG_2951

The Lincoln Funeral train came with the "United States" presidential car.  At the time this came out, I also bought the two car add-on set, and placed one of each with the Golden Spike locomotives.
