Hi Chris/Jim,

Sorry for the delay as I have been traveling (as I suspect Rob has otherwise I am sure he would have replied by now).  The two sets have been identified correctly.  I have had the pleasure of seeing his MTH Flying Colonel run on his beautiful layout.  I knew the red Presidents Special was on the way (and hence the reason I replied).

While the Flying Colonel has a slightly different color blue than an original (right ES?!), it is still a beautiful set.  Of course, the red Presidents Special is neat because it graced the cover of the 1928 American Flyer catalog and was never produced.

Sorry guys I have been traveling with no access (or time) for train related posts.  Yes both set are identified correctly.  Yes, the FC is the wrong shade of blue, but it is a neat set nonetheless.  BTW the sets are both ozone generator (read traditional motor) and weighted heavily for superb pulling power.

Hi Steve,

I also have a Hafner red 1110 because of its similarity to the Hornby Made in USA red locomotive.  When did Hafner introduce the 1110?  If later than 1927 perhaps they were influenced by the Hornby Made in USA red locomotive. Or visa versa.Hafner & USA Hornby

Lew, the litho 1110's were about 1931.

Steve

Hi Steve,

I agree that the 1110 came after Hornby's Red USA locomotive. Looks like Hafner was influenced by Hornby, or perhaps both were copying someone else (Ives?)
