With F units, one needs to watch the particular F unit they want to model, plus the date.  Over time, EMD did change items on the outside of the units during a production run.  Others were requested by the ordering railroads.  Then some roads did changes to the body as time went on.  Photos/slides of the unit at the time you are modeling are a must.

Some of the openings are for radiator air flow.  Others are for dynamic brake air flow.  Engine rooms on F-units were not sealed and pressurized, as were F45's.

Exactly. In fact, the engine room on ALL F Units, was at a negative pressure, when the engine was loaded, especially at full load. Thus, one NEVER flushed the toilet, located back inside the rear of the engine room, when the engine was loading!

 Ventillation of the engine room was through the upper openings as well as through the louvered filter openings.
