What To Do When Your Wife Tells You To Take Some Time Off From A Honey Do Vacation

So I have been taking a honey-do vacation this week.  My wife told me I should do something with my trains today.  Then she asked what I would do.  Well, it was supposed to rain, so I couldn’t play around with my new DCS system on the Patio Pacific RR.  The dog would be there, and she always attacks the trains on the Carpet Central RR.  The ¼ scale construction crew working on the Ceiling Central RR walked off the job in May to work outdoors and left two 612 scale feet chasms on the mainline with 2 freights and passenger train waiting indefinitely for the golden spike.  I am still collecting material that doesn’t come from a hobby shop for a scratch building contest, but construction doesn’t start until Sept 1st.  So what would I do?

 

Then she suggested I go to a hobby shop.  Good idea, but I didn’t want to spend any money because one of our daughters is getting married in October.  What good is it to go to a hobby shop and disappoint the owner that I left without buying?

 

Then it hit me.  I have been telling myself for a long time I need to pay a visit to Dave at Mercer Junction Train Shoppe in Mercer, Pennsylvania, a 45 minute drive away.  It has been almost 2 years since I was there.  (Yes, that is a crime!) I will go and see what I can order for a Christmas gift for me.  Every year I am told to pick something out for myself.

 

That is what I did.  We looked over the 2014 MTH catalogs, since I have MTH modern steam engines and a DCS system that I don’t know how to use yet.  (I do have two post war engines and a bunch of cars to keep you post war guys paying attention)  Dave let me use the DCS to run a Hudson he had on the layout.  Then he ran some impressive Heritage.

 

I did buy some track components for the Patio Pacific and went home with both 2014 MTH catalogs to peruse, look at ‘prospective’ ship dates with the idea of contacting him later to put in an order.

 

To those of you in the Western Pennsylvania – Eastern Ohio area, you probably already know about Mercer Junction Train Shoppe.  If you don’t or are from elsewhere and coming through the area you owe it to yourself to pay Dave a visit.  He is located close to I-79 and I-80.  He is also a Forum Sponsor, so you can find a link to his Web site in the top banner area.

WOW! Consider yourself fortunate.

 

For the Easter "Stay-cation" we demo-ed the Master Bathroom

For the Memoral "Stay-cation" we did all the rough-in for the Master Bathroom

For the Labor Day "Stay-cation" we will be finishing the Master Bathroom

 

Before you trash me, YOU take a bathroom down to the wall studs and floor joists and put it all back together all by yourself!

 

Trains? I haven't been able to spend 5 minutes working on my layout in 5 months. I have actually gotten to play 2 rounds of Golf.

Mark, 

I am still trying to wrap my head around the title of your thread. I cannot imagine my wife telling me to forget the honey-do list and spend time with my trains. Or go spend some money at the train store.

You are one lucky guy. I'd probably be so rattled if my wife gave me a free pass that I wouldn't be able to enjoy it. She-who-must-be-obeyed loves to keep my honey-do list long. She's thoughtful that way.

I think feel bad for you.  I think my wife took pity for me since I have been trying my best with the honey do, but she can tell I will have to be getting the carpal tunnel surgery soon.  (second time for both hands in 20 years)  I can't say I'm all thumbs, because the thumbs work the worst of all.

Spence,  you need to make a suicide trip to Mercer Junction. I used to do that from So Cal to Reno Rails (Reno,Nev) before the owner passed away. He had a lot of inventory. This last summer we were in Sequoia Nat Park, and I made a 6 hour side trip to the Western Depot. Nothing beats a good train store fix!

Since Mercer Junction is mostly a MTH shop, with little Lionel in stock, if I lived in the area it wouldn't be on my "need to visit" list, being a Legacy operator. Sounds good for those into MTH, though.

Yes, I see he has some Lionel there, but not near as much as MTH.  I guess he does mostly pre-orders for Lionel.  Mike Regan did visit there in November 2012 to do a show and tell about Legacy, because that is how I know when I was last there, on my birthday.  Thanks for pointing that out for anyone else who might have similar interests.

I know I am pretty lucky with the honey do lists.  She'll tell me about things she would like to have done but there is no deadline as such.  It's a "when you get to them" deal (Except for emergency repair things)

 

i am one of those nuts that always needs to be doing things so I am generally busy doing things all day.  But whenever I say I want fool with the layout all day she generally replies "Good for you, take a break and do something fun".

 

And the best part is when I say I want to goto the hobby shop or to a train show she wants to go along with me.   She likes seeing all the train goodies.  Heck, she must like trains, she's accompanied me to York 5 times!

 

Yes in deed I am very lucky. And no she does not have a sister ��

Yes she is a keeper.

 

Here, After 500 plus landscape bricks, 250 feet of edging, 20 bags mulch, 20 bags top soil, pressure clean the house, 4 new rain barrels installed  and ordering her a 2015 Ford explorer she is letting me chill a little.

 

I did hire a brick layer to removed and replace the 5 steps on the front porch....I don't do bricks.

 

The good news is that she knows come thanksgiving until the end of February is MY 100 % train room time. So I'm happy happy happy with that.

I have been blessed for richer or poorer for 30 years now.  It took a while for me to find her, but I have been so blessed.

You truly are a blessed man!!!!!!!!!!

 

My wife "tolerates" the hobby I think because I am spending "quality time" with our son Joe,we also build model airplanes together.

 

What got my wife to "loosen" up was how my son went from having difficulty reading in first grade to scoring at a 4th grade level in 2nd grade!!! Dure to the hobby. He has developed great hand eye coordination from all the work we do on our layout and model building. As a consequence he has developed into quite a baseball player and continues to do well. It's those things that keep my wife supportive

I have never had the experience you have had Mark
