They are a perfect fit. You should go on line and check out all the Lionel passenger trains Lionel as done over the years with LC+ size engines and the Baby Madisons. In the MPC era, Lionel did a whole bunch of famous sets like this, including the Crescent Limited, Chicago and Alton (pictured below), Blue Comet, Chessie Steam Special, Wabash and others. It's surprising you haven't heard of these - they are well known, and lots of these sets are still around everywhere. More recently, among others, Lionel did a remake of the Chessie Steam Special in 2005, pre-LC with TMCC, but it's a LC+ type engine with the Baby Madisons (picture below). Go on line - there are tons of references about these trains, videos of them running, etc. As you can see, these cars "are made for" these engines.
