I received an MTH newsletter yesterday announcing the return of the FP-45 locomotive in various road names with PS/3 capabilities.  I have a PS/2 FP-45 with the Great Northern "Big Sky Blue" paint scheme.  Since MTH took care to use a new locomotive number on the new PS/3 version, I'm thinking I might buy one in the GN paint scheme.  Before I make a final decision, I'm wondering:

  • Will my older FP-45 work in tandem with the new PS/3 version in a double-header locomotive consist?
  • What would I need to do or need to have a dealer do so they will work together properly?

On a related note:

My last layout had DCS including two TIUs and an AIU, but all the trains and accessory items have been in storage since we moved to our new home nearly five years ago  We'll probably start building the new layout (7 X 21) in the late winter as soon as some basement remodeling is finished.  Do I need to do anything with those two TIUs and AIU to update them to work with PS/3 locomotives?

Thank you.

Will my older FP-45 work in tandem with the new PS/3 version in a double-header locomotive consist? So easily- ANYONE can pull this one off with no skill or special knowledge required. MTH DCS (PS2 and PS3) engines use tachometer encoding with wheel size and gearing to follow accurate scale MPH as indicated or commanded by DCS. If you lash up the engines (any DCS PS2 or PS3) and command them to a speed- they both go the same speed- that simple.

What would I need to do or need to have a dealer do so they will work together properly? Jack squat. Already factory "baked in" by design.

Do I need to do anything with those two TIUs and AIU to update them to work with PS/3 locomotives? Again, NOTHING is required. The last DCS firmware update was 6.1 before I even joined the hobby in 2018. Even older versions could run PS2 and PS3- there is no difference to DCS. Ideally, you should be on the latest update, but you may already be there.

Vernon is correct it should work pretty well. There are a few things that sometimes misbehave with PS2 +PS3 MU consists (lash-ups). For example, sometimes one of the engines diesel or chuff sounds will turn off. It’s easily remedied by selecting the muted engine in the remote and adjusting its volume back up.

Another thing I find helpful is after making changes like that, make sure you hit the FSV button (after selecting the consist again). This ensures the settings carry forward to your next operating session.
