I took the risk of buying a NOS set of Williams FA2s in a rare road name that's one of my favorites. Came beautiful except the powered unit doesn't move. I've read hear about grease hardening (in the gearbox, I think) and am guessing that's at least part of my issue. I also found, unfortunately, that zinc pest had set in. The drive truck looks shattered and just gripping it caused pieces to break off.

I'm thinking this is repairable but not sure where to begin. I don't want to return the set. Price was quite fair and it's not a set that come up often, so I'm very willing to sink some money into these. Seems like I need at least a whole drive/geared truck assembly.  Anyone know if Bachmann or a dealer carries replacements?

Thanks!

Sadly they are sold out of FA2 trucks.

See if this block is same as for your application, ……although as mentioned above some drive blocks do cross pollinate, that’s not a guaranteed promise, and it’s not a safe bet to assume ……Williams changed designs, vendors, etc, so not all parts are perfect matching. ….take a look at this one and see if it resembles yours. I put a rule down so you can kinda judge what the length is vs. yours…..I placed it so you can see centerline of axle to centerline of axle …

I picked up a few NOS Williams Diesels with grease hardening in the gearbox after years of storage. I applied a few drops of Mobil 1 full synthetic oil 10W-30 or you can use Labelle 107. Just let it soak into the hardened grease and after a hour or so carefully and gently work the wheels back and forth and they should turn freely. You can repeat the process and clean the old grease out with Q Tips and relubricate with Labelle 106 or your preferred brand.
