OK so I got my ERR AC Commander today and I discover that the motor only has two wires going out of it. Do I actually have an AC motor on this thing or do I need a DC Commander? There are four wires that go from the engine to the board and you can see the connector from the tender in the picture next to the motor. I have the original manual on the GS4 but it doesn't give me any clue as to whether the motor is actually AC or DC. Just says the engine is AC compatible on the box.

Stop!..you have a DC motor...you need a Cruise Commander...

You need a different board. I'd recommend the Cruise Commander, but you can also use the DC Commander.
The add-on boards are for the motor type, and MTH has DC motors in everything except a couple of the tinplate items.
OK, thanks very much for your help!
Always good to ask before jumping in. I'm an ERR dealer and I've installed many of these for a host of people.
Fortunately, I only took apart the engine to see what was going on. I've done one install before on a Williams F7 and that worked well so when I saw only two wires coming out of the motor but I thought maybe the ground is hidden or something because there were four wires going into the chip. Other than counting wires how do you tell whether you've got AC or DC motors?
Can motors are DC, and they're just that, they look like a can. AC motors are open-frame and there will be no doubt where the three wires come from. You'll also see the exposed brush plate and springs.

Thanks John for the pics. That helps although when I took apart the Williams F7 the two motors looked like DC can motors except for the three wires coming out of each one. So when I took apart the GS4, I was a little puzzled.
Hey John, I stand corrected the Williams is also running a DC commander! Good thing I checked my previous posts!

Hey Roger, please know I wasn’t trying to be abrupt, just didn’t want to see you have a nuclear meltdown on your GS4......stick with what John says....he’ll keep ya straight...

Williams has a habit of connecting a ground wire to the motor, that doesn't count in the number of "wires" connected for the motor. If the motor looks like the can I posted, it's a DC motor.
