In the next many posts are photos ( with captions ) from the Patsburg Gazzette which show the Grand Opening of the new Commuter Station in downtown Patsburg this past Monday morning July 27, 1954. The commuter station was built by the Free State Junction Railway in order to relieve the congested Union Station on the south side of town. This new commuter station will handle all commuter trains of the B&0, Pennsy, Western Maryland, Norfolk and Western, and Reading Railroads.
While not Grand Central Station in NYC, this little two platform station was bustling on Monday morning.
CIrca 1954, the station was officially opened by President Dwight Eisenhower whose POTUS train arrived at the new station early this past Monday morning July 27.
The morning started early with breakfast at JAHNS.

There was an early morning haze as folks gathered for the opening and the arrival of the POTOS train with President Eisenhower and special guests he brought along for this most special event.

Precisely at 5:09 a.m. the POTOS train arrives. Ike is standing on the left side of the rear platform.

President Eisenhower with his special guests, the Dali Lama, Mother Theresa, and Popeye ( who looks like he may be searching for a can of spinach ).
After the speech I.C. Keys ( standing behind the Dali Lama and Mother Theresa ) performed Chattanooga Choo Choo and The Orange Blossom Special on his accordion. The crowd went wild for these tunes, however, his rendition of Hail to the Chief ( as the president arrived ) was a bit lackluster. Of course Hail to the Chief played on an accordion is no match for the regal sound of a brass band. The president seemed happy though. As the Dali Lama was introduced I.C. broke open with a chorus of Hello Dolly. I.C has never been know for his graceful tact.

Precisely at 5:54 a.m. the first commuter train arrives at the new station. B&O train number 10, a consist of two RDC cars ( RDC 1s to be exact ). The crowd cheered as the engineer eased the consist to a gentle stop and gave a short toot of the horn to confirm the brakes were fully applied.

Exactly at 5:56 a.m. the second train arrives .... Western Maryland train 5 running westbound. Comprised of baggage car, RPO and one coach. The coach car filled quickly with riders from the the new station. A postal worker kicked off two bags of mail.

B&O train 12 arrives heading east as Pennsy MU cars depart heading west. These two trains conclude the morning commuter activity at the new Patsburg Commuter Station. What a great way to kick off the day!!!

Alan, that really is a "Grand" station. Where do the trains arrive/depart from - behind underneath? And do you have a train shed associated with the station? Enjoy viewing your layout as always.

Thank you Ray!....the passenger yard is double ended so the trains arrive and depart from a 8 foot long train shed on the north end and under the station on the south end...
