Hello everyone. I have several of these huge 60' Hy-Cube box cars and they are awesome. I just purchased a 2 rail and need to convert it to 3 rail.

Easy enough...... Remove the 2 rail trucks and Kay-Dee style scale coupler/pocket. Then I purchased new Atlas O 3 rail trucks from ebay. First, the 70 ton roller bearing trucks #66034 and the coupler shank is too short. Then bought again from ebay 100 ton roller bearing trucks #66030 and again shank is too short. Then I called Atlas parts to see if I can buy long 3 rail shank, and I got the "deer in the headlights response" from the parts person. They do not stock this item and make the trucks to order from manufacturer. Latley, trying to get any part from Atlas is a big challenge. So it seems like I have to buy another Berwick Hy-Cube sixty footer that is 3 rail and swap the trucks, very frustrating.... And ideas out there?

Thanks!

Hi, had the same problem, bought the atlas caboose 3-rail roller bearing truck, as it has the long shank coupler. use the 3-rail 70 ton truck. and swap the coupler shanks. one screw removes the coupler easily. caution the spring can fly, but you can hold it in place if you are careful. hope it works for you, I have converted 10 2-rail cars with no problem. drawback is of course the cost of two sets of trucks with couplers.

I've converted about four of the three-rail versions of these cars to scale couplers and have the extended shank couplers you need lying around somewhere. I'll try to track them down. I could probably make use of the two-rail couplers and draft gear boxes you have so maybe we can do a swap.

Put it back to 2-rail, remove the chassis, send it to me and I'll send you a 3-rail chassis. Just a thought.

Hello Matt. Wouldn't it be easier to send you the 2 rail trucks, and couplers and you send me the 3 rail trucks. there is another user that I was waiting to hear back from as we bother agreed to swap trucks/couplers. So if you can wait a few more days, I would appreciate it. Also, I noticed you live around the LA area since your a member of the Angles Gate Hi-Railers club. I live in Rancho Cucamonga and a member of the San Diego 3-Railers.

Thanks Matt.

Thanks Matt.

You're really close to me as I live in San Bernardino. I can do the truck exchange easily. With Atlas cars, it's quicker to swap chassis than remove the couplers. That's what I've done with a couple of Hy Cubes -- get one cheap in a road name I'm not interested in, swap the chassis with one I want to 2-rail, then re-sell the other car.
