Hey all,

I am in the middle of installing an upgrade kit into an SD70 MAC PS1.  All has went well until I got to the point of testing/running the engine.  No matter how I approach it, I cannot get the shutdown sequence to work properly.  The engine won't hold an ID and it has to be deleted and readded every time I attempt to work with it.  I have another kit I plan to raid another upgrade kit and swap the boards, but I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem.  Thanks.

I think I would re-load the sound file before swapping boards. As Joe pointed out, it does sound like a battery problem.... maybe because the shut down software part didn't take. Maybe even try a different file. Are you using the battery that came with the kit?? They take a few hours to charge.  Good luck.

Either the battery might be bad or the charging circuit is not  functioning. possibly, you had a wire become disconnected from the 10 connector.

I can tell you this ounce you add your engine and save it, it has not been stored yet until you tell the engine with the DCS remote to shut down or if in conventional, it's suppose to save the engine number on power down!  if the battery circuit is not working the engine id will not be saved. the way you can tell add the engine and let it run then while its running turn the power off , you should hear the sounds for 6 to 10 seconds after power down, if it does not continue to make sound for 6 -10 seconds the battery circuit is not working and you will loose the address you had created. it save the engine id every time you power down! I know as in had it happen to me , i believe you don't have a bad board check the battery wiring form the 2 pin red ,n black connector to the battery. compare all wiring in this circuit against the upgrade paperwork it is all color coded.

Take your time as one short circuit and you'll blow the board!

The battery is good, measures at 2.6 with a load.  Charging circuit is working, voltage at all points along the connection.  I have tried multiple good batteries and a second charging jack cable and no joy.  At this point a board swap is not difficult as I have not yet closed up the engine, etc..  Just wondered if anyone had this same issue.  Very puzzling.  Thank you.

yes i had the same issue you are having but it was a steam engine not a diesel and the 10 pin connector on the loco the black wire had broken off i had the same good voltage reading as u did bit the sound died immediately after power down, that's how i knew it was the battery voltage dieing immediately instead of 6 - 10 seconds, i soldered the black wire back on the loco 6-8-6 turbine engine 10 pin connector and then tried it. Worked perfectly!

Alan

Can you send some pictures on this forum of the engine wiring and maybe i can see something out of the norm. or email to me and ill print and blow up the pictures and I'll try to help you!

Good luck

Alan

Also had another thought, have you tried blowing the whistle or ringing the bell while the engine is on the track and powered up! do any sound effects work while power is on, this is very important.let me know ASAP

Alan

P.S. as someone stated earlier did you down load the sound file to the engine, it will not function without the sound file loaded into the engine. i put one new PS 2 board into one of my kits and the man i bought it from said he ad loaded the sound file for the engine i had, well as it turns out there was only a test file for sound and all the board would do is squeal when oi pressed the whistle or bell button. I downloaded the file from mth and when finished the engine came on and played the sounds ,and then everything worked perfectly.

please send me your item diesel engine number and I'll look up the file for you.

Hope i can Help

Alan

one other quick thought , do you have another ps 2 engine that works, if so put your board from this new up grade engine into the old engine, and then try it at least you'll prove the board is good or bad and should not damage anything, if you were to put a know good board into the engine your upgrading and something is wired wrong you could blow the board ! that's why im suggesting you try you new upgrade board into A engine that you know works. does not matter weather it is a diesel or steam the sounds will still work!

let me know what you find out!

Charly, Start the engine up conventionally with the battery installed.  Turn off the power.  Does the engine play shutdown sounds?  If not sounds like a bad board.  Try swapping the power supply from a good engine.

If that fixes it, I can repair your power supply.  If that doesn't fix it, the processor board is bad.  G
