Anyone know who stocks Atlas 2-rail trucks (preferably somewhat discounted)? I have some MTH cars I want to switch over and like what I saw with Mike Deberg's conversions. Need to find all types -- 70-ton/100-ton roller bearing, Bettendorf, and Caboose roller bearing.

Thanks.

Matt, the Western Depot carries a decent supply of Atlas trucks for 2 rail. Probably not discounted to much though. I try to pick up a few pairs of trucks at York from Diechman's Depot. They sell on the bay but their York prices are much better with no shipping involved. Not sure of their 2 rail supply.

I tried to sell some Bettendorf  friction type a while back. No offers. Once I disassemble a car I will have 4 pairs. One weathered by a well known 2 rail modeler. I purchased a woodsided car from him just to study his technique. They are all new. Unfortunately they are the older stock with the wide frame. Also have one pair of Andrews trucks that I weathered with just a little wear. If they are of use.

Email nyc_dave1948@yahoo.com and I'll ship them to you.

Matt,

If you have any atlas 3 rail trucks, I have a few 2 rail sets to trade.  I need 3 sets for steam era box cars.   Send me an email.

I've got 'em. Send me what you need off-list.

Joe:

I was looking at those Protocraft trucks and I've been thinking about which car would be worthy of a pair. I have a couple of Lykens Valley open auto-rack kits. Maybe I'll build them and put Protocraft trucks on them.

The great thing about putting those Protocraft trucks on the Atlas well sets, is that they make a heavy metal set of cars super easy to pull. I think someone posted that they are not the correct set to use to be prototypical. I'm really happy as they look good to me and roll so well. I wish they were cheaper but right now, they are a great value. I want to try the 100 ton ones I see for sale on the bay site. I hate building in two different scales. Three really as G scale for me is 2. It could be many more.

I have to stay away from HO. When I look at what's available, I want to go back to that one too. I hope O scale 2 rail survives and becomes more popular! You can't beat the mass and sturdier detail in O. If I were rich, I would probably just go to all 1/32. So I'm not, and I need to finish some kind of O scale layout soon. I look forward to seeing what you build outside Matt.

Matt & Joe,

I am not sure if Protocraft is making O-Scale trucks anymore. They seem to be exhausting their In-Stock O-Scale trucks & they are only restocking the Proto-48 trucks. I used to buy their O-Scale trucks when I converted my Lionel Husky stack cars to 2-rail but I contacted Norm 2 years ago & also talked with him at last year’s Chicago O-Scale meet & it didn’t look like he will be restocking O-Scale trucks.

I agree with Joe that these were the smoothest rolling trucks I had ever experienced & were the easiest replacement for Lionel freight cars but I have moved on to Atlas trucks for my Lionel Auto-Rack conversions even though Protocraft still have a few O-Scale 70-ton trucks in stock. I am only converting a couple of cars at a time & I didn’t want to have to switch trucks if Protocraft ran out of their current stock.

I guess with Atlas upgrading their 2-rail freight car trucks with narrower side frames & also Bill Davis (American O-Scale models) introducing unpainted O-Scale freight car trucks, both at a lesser price than Protocraft trucks might have reduced the demand for Protocraft trucks.

These are just my opinion,

Thanks,

My dilemma is even worse than yours that's why I've had posts on here about staying in HO as I have to get rid of all my better HO equipment to make it in O Scale.

Size it what holds me every time in O Scale but as you stated,if it isn't already available in HO,chances it will be. Either way I go I'll hate myself, losing the size in HO,while losing the readily available market of countless items from HO,if I stay in O. One just has o make a decision then look the other way & never look back.

I saw that on Page 6 in the March/April 2016 issue of one of the resourceful free online O scale magazines that Wasatch Model Company was taking reservations for ball bearing equipped Barber S-2 100-Ton roller bearing modern freight car trucks made by OCS Micro-Casting of Korea for 5' gauge O Scale.  These appear to be very similar, if not the same, as those previously provided by Protocraft.  It states that actually going forward on production will depend on reservation demand so act NOW, if you want to see these go to production.  No pricing information or availability timeline was given.

Here is the Wasatch Model Companty site; however, there was no site page or link specifically for the aforementioned 100-Ton trucks; however, an email link is on the site (copied below), so you can probably just use that to indicate your intentions.

I keep reading where you guys use Athearn trucks.  Are they still being made or is this all old/new stock?  Most of the time when I find them for sale it's usually only a pair or two.

Right off the Athearn website:

Unfortunately, they're not roller bearing with rotating caps, are they? That's the reason I use Atlas trucks as much as possible. Ok they work best if kept 'rigid', rather than remove the cross plate that then allows a bit of equalising, but I've found the binding of the axles more trouble than the springing is worth.

True, but the OP did ask about Bettendorf in the list that was posted and Bob also asked whether Athearn were still made - I merely pulled up the Bettandorf as an example of what a quick Google search might deliver....

The sideframes are thicker and thus further apart.  I'm replacing them with Protocraft P48 trucks (when they are available).  6 pair would be $80 plus shipping.  8 pair $100 plus shipping.  I think I can get 6 pair in a small flat rate ($6.8) box but 8 pair may take a medium ($13.4) I'd have to try.

Contact me off-list. I'll take 8 pairs -- 4 70-ton/4 100-ton if you have 'em. I'm not building contest models, so the old style side frames don't bother me.

Scott,

I sent an e-mail to the address you posted for Wasatch Models 2 weeks ago about these freight car trucks but I have not heard back from them. Would you have any more information that you could share with us?

Thanks,

If you are interested in the older style with the thicker sideframes I've got a bunch to offload.  The more you take the more the discount.

After Matt is done, maybe I could get some later on too if there's any left.

Bought 8 pairs. I'm converting two Center Beam flat cars and was thinking about setting them up for Atlas trucks instead of Weaver. Going to use the others for 2-railing existing Atlas cars.
