The point here of course is that there is nothing funny about this family or situation. Is the reason why she has been "chasing the son around all day" because he has ADHD or some other neurological impairment? And look at how they are dressed + body language. We live in a time where media has learned how to make big profit off of dysfunctional, acting out, impulsive people w/ failing lives/marriages.

 

Speaking of the 1950's: I remember the days when calling someone a twit/birdbrain was considered a derogatory term and a person who's only goal was to "be popular" was viewed w/contempt. Boy have the role models, life goals & competencies changed over the past 20 yrs!
