Anybody know when the first Lionel 4-4-0 was produced? How many variations (road names). Here's a few I found:

WARR #3,

USMRR,

Disneyland 35th Anniversary,

Nutcracker Route,

The General,

Rock Island and Peoria,

Disney Holiday Express,

Disney Mickeys' Christmas,

 Lone Ranger,

Wild Wild West,

Union Pacific,

ATSF,

Union Cavalry Corps (Union Civil War set),

Confederate States of America (Confederate Civil War set),

North Pole Central,

 Lionelville Circus,

Great Western RR ,

Union Pacific #213 (Great Train Robbery set, )

Redwood Valley Express,

5 Star General

A guy could make a hobby out of just collecting one of each.

Any other road names? Anybody want to post their own creations? Please enjoy.

The Generals were introduced by Postwar Lionel in 1959. The 1862 was for 027 and the 1872 was for Super "O".

The 1862 had a 2-position e-unit and a headlight.

The 1872 had a 3-position e-unit, headlight, smoke and magnetraction. Plus a little more trim.

There was also an uncataloged Postwar Lionel general, number 1882. I am unclear on the year.

Thank You!

This is what I love about the Forum.

Folks like Ed H  and  C.W. Butfle, are knowledgable and passionate about this hobby and willing to share their insights when asked.

I once owned a Disney 35th anniversary ( it was a good runner. Sold it. ), and was recently thinking about getting the Rio Grande 4-4-0... Now I'm inclined to see which one on the list better appeals to me.

Basic conventional or maybe one with all the bells and whistles

I've had 2 Generals. A black and red open-frame AC motor version from the MPC era, and the Lone Ranger version (for repaint and detailing) from recent production. The MPC version ran well, the recent production with can motor doesn't. It's jerky and requires a lot of power to operate smoothly, which translates into very fast. I'm wary of the new versions. Hopefully others who have the modern/current versions will reply, but my personal experience is to stay away from the can motor versions.

Don't forget Toy Story version.....OK....it's a 1 of 1 I did.....but my only General! Custom paint, decals and modified cab. thx

I think it's outstanding. Hopefully more and better models will be produced (outside of brass) to represent different types of equipment used during the 1870's--1910 era.

My all time favorite toy train to this day!  Here are some custom paint jobs i've done.  See if you can recognize their livery.

Outstanding!  Did you get the Disneyland RR logo for the water tower from a commercial product, or make it from scratch?  It looks like a good fit either way.

Seeing your pics reminds me I 'm still wishing that someday Disney might make a DL version of the Train Station to complement the one they did so long ago for WDW.  I'm not hopeful, but I can dream, right?   Also wish they would complete the set of new style monorails with the Blue version, since they did Red and Orange soon after they started running in the parks.  I'm wondering if they didn't because they are not as popular as I think, or maybe it's more difficult to do such a color?

Thanks for sharing!

Hey Dave, I followed your build on the old Burnsland board.  Love what you did with that 4-4-0.  Specially how you chopped the cab and made it look correct!  Any advice on how to accomplish that on future projects?  I love these Lionel Generals because they're soo easy to tear down, modify, repair etc.  Specially the current Lionchief blutooth models.  They run, sound, smoke, and look great on a layout!  In regards to my water tower:  The Logo is an actual pin available at the park

And I totally get what you mean about Monorail Blue!  It's the best looking one and they have yet to release one!

Keep the faith for a Disneyland Main St. Station.  I've got something in the pipe line that will be coming through in September

I can't recall the source, but I just recently read the RI&P is a replica of a purpose prepared special event train of the early 1900s. No mention of if the prototype was clad,or silver, or polished; but, regardless I had assumed it was complete fantasy. To read it was real in some way, was pretty cool.

The RIP cars are gold.  They show too way too yellow on a camera. I messed with photo to get close to gold, but they appear more gold in person. The red is dark, ruddy. Rustoleum primer is a bit too brown, but a near match; complementry anyhow.(Bobber roof & trim)

Bobber cabooses are fitting imo., I was very happy to see the little woodsides get a shot eventually. I had always wanted a caboose for mine. (This caboose is a painted over R.I. made for the red dockside engine)

To make up a longer, mixed consist thag including one of my oldest childhood cars, the somewhat heavy WF gunfighter car, I decided to double head.

A shorter coupler would be better and the lead's tender had to be weighted to avoid stringline and accordion derailment (#2 tender got some too. For the same benefit to operations, but more so I can swap at will.). But interestingly, the car count doubleheaded is one or two higher than separating the two.

Performance varies a lot by version. I would love to see a pulling force comparison test done on them all. I wonder if not by a collector/operator with some time, by us as a group. I think as long as the cars used are similar, it may not not be perfect, but it could be effective enough to "pin more stars" on one.

Cleaning, take care not to scratch the mirror shine with dust. I dust brush, then dip the brush in mildly soapy water, shake, then work the corners, then work the corners, finishing lightly with Qtips.

The white rim paint is delicate, but I've seen worse. I'd say semi-delicate.

Way too yellow, the bobber though darker, is closer to the tone of the set coaches when seen by eye vs camera.20180806_150433~2IMG_20170107_194345

John,

Must be a different Dave over on Burnsland.  I've not done any 4-4-0 mods like you described.  I most likely have viewed some content on Burnsland occasionally, but I am pretty sure I never signed up for an account to actually post anything.  So unfortunately, I have no advice to offer!

Good use of the DLRR pin!  I though maybe it looked like a pin, but I wasn't certain.

Glad to see I'm not the only one looking for Monorail Blue and the DL Main Street Station!  Look forward to anything you may show us in September.

To the original poster, sorry for the slight thread drift...
