FOR TODAY:  Wednesday morning down at the yard -  The town garbage truck, a 1953 Chevrolet,  is about to depart its' overnight parking spot.   Car knockers, Punky Niezley and Tatter Crocket are at the ready to inspect a string of cars the A5 switch crew will soon ease by them at 2 mph    ... just another day on the railroad.IMG_2747

The A5 switcher, shown in the above photo, has been busy all morning assembling  these two trains.  Soon their locomotives will arrive,  couple on , pump up the brakes, and head west ... one 30 minutes ahead of the other ... it's going to be a good day on the railroad! IMG_2742

FOR TODAY:   " Oh no! More snow!" MOW Superintendent Big Jim Slim exclaims. " Golly gee those plows been workin 72 hours straight already.   Flapjack Critchet replies, "I'm glad we have enough provisions because it looks like we're about to be stuck out here in this caboose in the middle of nowhere for the entire weekend!"   Reds Farkle chimes in " I sure hope we don't have chile again for supper!"  "I know whatcha mean Reds. That last batch was some high powered stuff!! Whew!!!"  Ricky Scruggs enters the conversation  while shaking his head back and forth and holding his nose. " The night before last was a rough one to endure for sure!  In the middle of the night onest we's all aslleepin o'l Brewster Stevens got up and opened the dang window to let some fresh air in.  Like to froze my keaster off!   Who ever heard of such a dang thing .. opening a window when it's 13 degrees outside!"  IMG_0167

This flanger is seeing some action for sure!   Directly behind the flanger, the headlight of the steam locomotive is barely visible.  The deer are hunting for food.  IMG_0166

This lone black bear may be on the verge of getting covered up with snow as the flanger digs in. IMG_0350

Hmmm, better not open the door to the stove, or light a match, otherwise might only be a set of  trucks left on the tracks!!!💥💥💥💥Boom

great pictures Pat, funny story! 💨

Now, that photo is aesthetically beautiful IMO. Arnold

Thank you so very much Arnold for your kind words about this photo and my later snow photo.   Much appreciated!

I love the D&H livery and especially as it is applied to their PAs.   Even though the D&H is not part of the 8 railroads I model, I had to purchase an ABA set ( Williams )  when they showed up brand new on the Bay because I LOVE the way these locomotives look.  A real cool thing is, both A units are powered!

FOR TODAY:  These photos were taken this past August, just as the plow equipment arrived on the rip track from the paint shop.  Maintenance crews spent an ample amount of time repairing and " tuning up " both the rotary and the Jordan spreader.  Their diligent and hard work is paying off today as the snow is giving these machines a good workout up on the Mountain Division.   Here we see Tusk Larkins, Jim Bobby Souder, and Clem Coogel checking out the spreader's wing.  It always pays off to prepare well!  IMG_1775

Hi guys first off I have to say SORRY! I just handed out a whole bunch of likes as I had to go back 2 months from the last time I visited this thread. As a few of you know I have been really busy with other things then trains and layouts! I hope that will change before next winter!

I do want to say I love all the pictures you all are posting and it just gives me ideas to put in my wish list bank!

I hope you all are doing well and safe! Please keep up all the great photos!

FOR TODAY:  The new Supervisor's first day on the job ... Ernie Mackadoo, dressed in white shirt, tie, and hat, is yelling orders to his workers ... as if these veteran workers need to be ordered as to what to do.  These guys, who roll their eyes in response to Ernie's barking orders,  know their jobs like the back of their hands.    Ernie is a young fella and is new to this Supervisor stuff.  The guys just ignore Ernie's gruff comments and go about doing their jobs as only they know how to do ... and I must say they do it well!! FOR TODAY:   The Patsburg Fire Dept has been called to the scene of a tank car leaking a flammable substance.   There's definitely a no smoking ban in effect which is to the dismay of Chief Bulldog Merson, who is always chomping on a cigar.   Firefighter  Brooks Benton is about to apply some foam on the leaking substance.  A HAZMAT unit has been dispatched and is now enroute.   IMG_7840

FOR TODAY:  After setting out this boxcar, this Pennsy A5 goes on with its' switching duties.  Eli Cransford is about to slide open the door of the B&O Time Saver boxcar to see what's inside.  Trucks will soon arrive and the trans- loading will begin.  IMG_2691

Jake Mobley has arrived with his truck, one of many trucks to haul away the contents of this boxcar.  The car is full with plumbing supplies destined for two building materials suppliers in Patsburg.  IMG_2678

You know something Patrick the one thing about your photos and layout is that everyone in Patburg is a family person, from the hard-working men or the hard-working wife's that support them! They always do the best they can to help each other! Heck the only surprise that gets me is the young man still riding around without any handlebars!

Great Scence!

FOR TODAY:  It's Monday mornin and the fellers are gitner done!

Tower operator Clauson Ainsley, perched on the top of the tower steps, waves to everyone while shouting "Good morning guys!"  All the old timers, former railroad workers, have congregated at the base of the tower resting their keasters on old milk crates, wooden boxes and what have you.  They'll be swapping stories, tellin lies, and watching the going on till about noon when they all leave to go home, eat lunch and nap.

Forklift operator Jackson Cooly yaks it up with truck driver Woody Larkins about  all the  good food they ate down at the firehouse supper this weekend.  " I'll tell you what Jackson.  That was some dang good eatin!  I ate till my belly was bout to explode."  Yup, me too Woody!  I had to go to the mens room and let out my belt two notches after all the food I ate up!  Once I did that,  I came back to the table for round two!  I couldn't get enough of that ham, baked beans, butter beans, cabbage and mashed taters!  Next mornin at church I sat in my own pew!!  I just couldn't figure out why that preacher man was scrunching up his nose so much during the entire service.  I can't wait for the next feed down at the firehall!'  Jackson with hearty laughter and shaking his head " Yup, me too Woody.  You know I'll be there!"  .... just another day on the railroad.

Pat, this story is great!  I can now identify with the old timers sitting on my keister.  For me , it is watching young power and telephone utility workers.  Then getting lunch and taking a nap!  😄

The firehall supper on Saturday, then church on Sunday rings home too.

BTW, the gents doing the actual work are gittin er done!!

Thanks Mark!  So glad you enjoyed the yarn!

Here are 2 of my creations for the Red Lion (PA) Model Railroad Club.

My first assignment was a back-of-layout corner filler, the "Schmutzig Coal Company". The lift tower to left and the coal delivery chute building to the right were done by our former club president. The rest (mountain carving and shaping, rock facing, coal car shed on the mountain and the shed below the tower) is mine.

I scratch-built and weathered the Railway Express Agency (REA) office and freight house. The surrounding fence and vegetation are mine also. REA Freight HouseREA Freight House 1REA Freight House 2

Excellent work, Randy!  Red Lion!  My uncle, aunt, and cousin moved there when he was transferred with Allegheny Ludlum Steel.  He had an American Flyer layout in the basement of their old home near us.  Unfortunately for me, they moved when I was 5, but I think his layout planted the trains seed

@Mark Boyce

Mark:

Thank you for the compliment. I really enjoyed the club while I was a member. Red Lion is about 1 hour from my house in Baltimore. I resigned from the club effective the end of last year due to health issues. The layout and the club members were all really great. I do miss them. My wife and I have made a trip or 2 up to their open-to-the-public events to say hello and see how the layout is progressing.

Also, your uncle sounds to have been a good influence on you getting you interested in our great hobby of model railroading. We all come to the hobby in different ways. Mine was through my maternal grandfather who worked 42 years on the Pennsylvania RR and retired in 1953, 2 years after I was born.

Keep up the great work on your layout and keep us up to date on the progress. I really enjoy your posts and admire your modeling skills.

Idaho Hotel is planning to host railfans in the future.

FOR TODAY:  Brakeman Nigel O'Toole is working the switch job today.  He thinks how it's too bad to have work on St. Paddy's Day. IMG_2803

Nigel yells up to fireman Mickey McNamara who stands on the tender deck " Hey Mic!  Let's head over to the Lucky Shamrock Pub for a couple pints of Guinness and a corned beef, cabbage, and potatoes supper tonight once we sign off for today.  O'l Lucky O'Keefe standing behind me here said he's definitely going too!"  Mic shaking his head in the affirmative yells back " Yep. Sound like a great idea!  I could knock back a nice stout right now!  I'm sure all the usual blokes will be there at the Shamrock too! It'll be a good time celebrating St. Paddy's Day tonight!  Good thing we don't have to work tomorrow!!"  IMG_2808

Taking a break at the "Charles Street Yard" on a Saturday afternoon...

Santa Fe cab 2

A straight load of 6" x 8" ties (creosote treated) arrives at the "Charles Street Yard" for the tie replacement program about to begin.  The forklift operator musters up his energy for the unloading task!  The "Peterbuilt" driver observes the yard helper chugging down a cold one...

Great scenes Paul.

I'm still in awe with those figures you have . If you can't tell me where you get them......then I am going to have to make a visit to your train when no one is around.

Always fun seeing  '  your action figures  '  sir.

So, Paul, Looks like our boy is in trouble again... I wonder if this is before or after he flipped his 55 Chey''''....

Yep Ted,  these don't look like my Lionel cookie cutter figures either.

You guys are going to have to share the source for these figures.

Hey DJ..  LOL, Actually, we both live in the same town.. Paul is in the rich section (LOL) and I'm in the poor area'..😁

The two figures in the  above photo are Artista.  I have many of those. Also, Woodland scenics, Some Chochilligans, (Secenic Express) Many from China, (we honest) and many, many from England, Model-U.  Those are the real scanned human figures....

Dallas, thanks for your response...the forklift guy and the fellow taking a sip of Sasparella are Arttista...the guy in the yellow hat and the RR guy are Preiser 1/43.  Ted has the best figures I've seen here.  I've tried to hand-paint figures without much success....!

FOR TODAY:  Engine 75 is stopped at the plug to take on water.  Fireman Bernie Evans and brakeman Feets Stover are on the tender's deck.  Once the spout is inserted in the cistern, Feets will place one of his size 14 shoes firmly on the spout to keep it in place as water pours in the cistern.  Meanwhile engineer Chubs Bromley sits in the fireman's seat and reminices about his days as a fireman as he says under his breath " Comin over here and sitting in this seat always reminds me of how grateful I am not to have to shovel coal and stand back there on the tender deck in all kinds of weather. Night departure from the station.  Brings back good memories of an overnight trip from Grand Central Station in NYC to Biloxi, MS at age 9 with parents.  We had a sleeper compartment for 3, I can clearly remember looking out the window at night from the bunk and falling asleep listening to the clickety-clack of the rails.  And the waffles in the dining car were great!

FOR TODAY:  Although there's a wedding happening today, tomorrow after the Easter service most folks will head over to JAHN'S for some sweat treats. IMG_0039

Now you’re bringing back the memories. When I was a kid my Uncle would take the whole family out to 7 Brothers in Queens, NY for dinner; and then we would go to Jahn’s for dessert! What is the brand of the building?

FOR TODAY:  Free State Junction Railway photographer I.C. Thrulenz happened to snap these shots this morning on his way to work at the railroad.

It's about 7:30 a.m. and Cab Tilkens  is working his milk route.  Always on time with a cheerful attitude and a smile on his face, Cab is loved by his customers ... perhaps by some more than others ... as there are few kids on his route that town folk say look remarkably like o'l Cab.    Hmmm ... what are the odds?

IMG_1918

Turning the corner this morning in his new 1950 Mercury is Dom Minassi, Free State Junction Railway's Superintendent of Passenger Operations.  He's headed down to the Patsburg Commuter Station.  Meanwhile, in the distant background,  a Baltimore & Annapolis Railroad caboose is bringing up the rear of a short freight train.IMG_1759

I.C. captured this shot very early this morning as the sun was coming up.  As soon as he clicked the button on his camera, a rooster crowed.  O'l I.C. loves to wake up before the chickens!   AND of course there's Cab having just loaded his truck with fresh milk. IMG_1741

Hi Sam, Those are great looking PA's. I am only a few hundred yards from the D&H mainline to Binghamton. Unfortunately I moved here in 1980 and the PA's had already vanished. I was lucky enough to see some first generation diesels. The railroad kept a pusher on the passing track below the house and you could hear that distinctive 244 prime mover idling. I am not sure there is a prettier paint scheme than those PA's.

Paul, great scene!  The two characters are making the most of an excellent opportunity!!  Oh, I remember the stories my grandma told of the hobos who came by for a meal during the depression.  Even though she was raising 4 children and grandpa was a disabled WWI vet, she always had a meal for a hobo coming by.  They deserved it after the long hike up the hill from the B&O station where the train stopped and they disembarked.

FOR TODAY:  It's a" sun is shining morning" Monday morning in Patsburg!   Clara and Ed Snuffly are about to enjoy a delicious cup of freshly brewed coffee at one of the outdoor tables at Carlson's Creamery.  Anita Crowley is walking to the beauty salon for her 9:30 a.m. appointment.  IMG_1774

Uh oh!!  The crossing gate must be broken!  Puffy Higgins, the grade crossing watchman, is in the middle of the road stopping traffic.  Looks like the person driving that 1950 Mercury saw Puffy and is making a detour.  A train must be coming ...  and according to o'l Puffy he took an oath to serve and protect the grade crossing in all kinds of weather and situations no matter what.  Of course he announced this rather loudly down at O'Doogle's Pub St. Patricks Day evening after he downed his fourth pint of Guinness.  He even went on to say how the railroad made him swear this oath with his right hand placed on the railroad rule book.  Yep, the railroad is full of colorful characters and o'l Puffy is one of them!   IMG_1779

I wonder how many flat tops, whiffles, and Detroit haircuts Don will give today? IMG_1792

Thanks Paul, its been awhile, the move from Washington state to Missouri was a long drive! I would read and look at all the post from OGR but it is to hard for me to write alot on a cell phone, so I waited till I could get my computer out!

It is nice to see everyone is still putting up wonderful photos!

FOR TODAY: It's about to be a long long night for this 3 man MOW crew!  This tiny caboose is their home away from home for the night.  As it's now quiting time Sneezy Dowell rolls a barrel into place as  Jeb Klausen stands beside the caboose wiping his brow in disbelief and anticipated fear, for O'l Amos Diller has rushed to the outhouse, yet again, to deal with his bout of the Hershey squirts.  ... just another day on the railroad.
