Step 1 go to Lionel parts, lookup your target vehicle and figure out what it has now.

https://www.lionelsupport.com/...k-Inspection-Vehicle

That way, we have some idea of the space and configuration. Then we go with known similar TMCC capable motorized vehicles.

Example https://www.lionelsupport.com/...tion-Vehicle-6-38810

In doing so, we find the RCDR https://www.lionelsupport.com/...R-INSPECTION-VEHICLE

Then we grab the documentation by @Bruk https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/...%20and%20Pinouts.pdf

Sorry, was trying to edit 2 posts at the same time and it all went wrong.

Also, don't get me wrong, you could easily use an ERR mini commander and the documentation and wiring harness would be in the kit.

http://www.3rdrail.com/err-3rd...ls/Mini-Com-Inst.pdf

I just know that Lionel directly used a number of boards in speeders, inspection cars, and a number of other vehicles as well.

Just comes down to cost and how DIY you want to be.

Also, just took apart my 2135110 CSX TMCC Ballast Tamper.

What makes this different is they use 2 diodes in series to the motor to make forward and reverse.

From top to bottom

1. Red= 3rd rail power in

2. Blue= Motor Forward  cathode towards board diode in series

3. Yellow= Motor reverse anode towards board diode in series

4. White= light 1

5. Black is common frame outer rail- also motor common- and common for all lights and program switch

6. skip

7. Brown=light2

8. Green= Light3

9. Black= Program

Diodes with heatshrink cut away

I did an article for the June/July Run 236 of the magazine on this exact topic.

Besides the TMMC upgrade, I added pickup rollers and improved outside rail pickups to allow the vehicle to go most anywhere on the layout without skipping a beat!

See PDF attached. At that time, I used a "Beep Commander Kit". Not sure which ERR component you would use now.

Good luck with your project!

The Beep Commander was a unique offering but hasn’t been available for some time.

I was able to shoehorn it plus a Sound Commander, also NLA, into a modern 1615 type 0-4-0 tender. A mini Commander should be no problem fitting into this relatively large item. The Lionel inspection car is considerably smaller and has TMCC.
