Just starting to install drywall and lighting for a 38'x14'  (532 square feet) train room. Basement with no natural light. 7'6" ceiling. Perimeter bulkhead to hide ducts, etc. Thinking of dimmable LED recessed lights spaced around  the room in the bulkhead (for an around the room layout) and in the ceiling down the center of the room.

Right now, Costco has a very good sale on low profile, 700 lumen, warm white recessed lights with a 100 degree beam angle

Can anyone suggest the total number of lumens required for general viewing. As well, with the dimmer, I want the option to turn up the light for when I am working on the layout.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

My train room specs are about the same as yours. Have removed a previous/old plaster ceiling (to expose all pipes and wires in case future work is needed), and painted everything in the then-open ceiling with flat black Dryfall paint. That work was done by a professional who does this kind of painting almost exclusively. Installed LED track lighting for the layout and a couple of long overhead LED fluorescent lights for general room lighting when needed. I am well satisfied with the results. ALL lighting in (and outside) my home has been converted to LED, and that has resulted in a significant savings on the electric bill.

Bob O,

MyTrain room has recessed ceiling LED's, the room is painted white and the 8 LED's work Great.  IMO it's not just the candle power of your lights/LED's, its how the room is painted and in what color.  If you have a lot of dark colors on the room, you will need more LED's, the lighter the room is painted the less lighting needed.  This particular Train Room/Bar is 29X18.

The white colored Train Room has about 8 over head LED's recessed into the ceiling, here in the picture below the last 2 LED's are turned off, except for the small LED lights behind the bar, and the small LED Christmas Tree lights.

Here the last 2 over head ceiling LED's are lighted, great lighting because of the paint coloring in the room.  Easy room to work in for sure.
