This is a copy and paste from the A.C. Gilbert Erector Set site---------------------------------

First, we'll cover painting. Below are a number of paints that give a good match to the appropriate Erector colors (there are other matches):

  • Yellow - Rust-Oleum # 7747 Sunburst Yellow
  • Red - Rust-Oleum # 7762 Sunrise Red
  • Blue - NAPA # 624 - Chevy Engine Blue
  • Dark blue - Dupli-Color # DE1606 Ford Dark Blue
  • Black - Plasti-Kote #1100 Gloss Black (or any glossy black enamel)

There are two shades of blue listed. The "Blue" paint is a close match to the blue erector boxes and MN/MD/MY baseplates from the 1930's and 1940's. Also listed is a "Dark blue" paint which is a match for some early 1950's sets I have with a distinctly darker blue, almost a purple colored MD/ME/MF plates.--------------------------------------I was wondering if Gilbert used the same color as American Flyer?
