Recently I completed this commercial project down in Birmingham, Alabama. Building train layouts is not what our business model is about, as we SELL scenery, not really USE it. But the client insisted that I do it personally and tempted me with a “carte blanche” budget. (Yes, NO $ LIMIT!) So, why not?

Not that the money wasn't nice, but what I truly gained with this project was the first-hand experience of using the many scenery products we sell. It was nice getting my hands dirty, discovering new techniques and sometimes getting glue stuck to everything, but I learned… a lot! Most of the scenery products surprised me how effective they really are; especially how complimentary they work together. Yes, a few were disappointing and came up a little short in expectation. But when used resourcefully in certain areas, they always seemed to work.

The initial 70’ x 30’ layout (benchwork, track and electronics) was designed and constructed by Model Railroad Custom Benchwork in Virginia. The client already had the buildings and structures that he collected throughout the years. My job was to create the massive scenery. And let me tell you after crawling up and down the platform over 50 plus times a day for 18 days, it really made me feel my 55 years.

Hope you like the pix’s…  Jim
