I have a Legacy base and remote and wonder if alkaline batteries for the remote are better than using rechargeable batteries.

If using rechargeable batteries, are there any special brands to use or to stay away from, any "watch out for" or "be careful when using rechargeables".

What do you use and why?

If the charger works then stick with the ones that come with it. If you need new ones some at Radio Shack were recommended to me a while back by Mike Reagan

I was specifically told not to use the Sanyo Eneloops by Lionel tech support, even though they are my favorites.

You can use alkalines or lithiums, make sure to turn off the built in charger if you do, some people also tape over the contacts in the base. Or you can get a few sets of rechargeables and use an external charger

I have no idea. I just know when I sent my CAB-2 back to Lionel with them installed, it came back with a note saying "Do not use these" attached to a bag holding the eneloops and a new set of the GP stock batteries in the hand held.

All I can assume is that because the eneloops are only 1900 mah  and the GPs are 2600 mah that the charger has issues with them. I have also used externally charged ones without any incident, I just do not place the CAB-2 in the cradle while I do

I got a similar note a while ago when I sent a 990 back with Alkaline batteries in it.  It had an emphasized handwritten note that I should not be recharging Alkaline batteries (duh!  I wasn't recharging them, just didn't want to send a good set of rechargeable batteries in with the remote).

Unfortunately customer service has to assume the lowest common denominator of the public since they don't know what we may or may not know.  It's a CYA thing.
