Is it possible to use an electrically isolated aluminum shell as a TMCC antenna? I'm planning on upgrading via ERR, and while I know a die-cast shell can be used, I don't know if an aluminum one can be.

Yes, using an electrically-isolated aluminum shell is fine.
Lionel used this method on their StationSounds aluminum passenger cars.

All are better than pot metal. Note that Copper is more conductive than Gold. Gold plating is primarily used to prevent the oxidation of the connector metal. And the thickness of the Gold is so thin, it doesn't contribute significantly to the resistance of the connector.
Just use nylon screws and nuts and float the shell over the base.
Thanks guys! Figured it should work, but also know it's wise to check with folks who know more than I do, since I'd never tried it. Going to add TMCC and Railsounds to my Metroliners...
