This is more fun for me than arguing over stupid posts about things that don't matter with our toys. I know jobs were probably lost there,

and yes, I have no RR experience so please take no offense. It is interesting to look at things from the outside. I know that realities set in and there maybe nothing there. I just look at the possibilities with optimism and no RR experience.

There was a tank car cleaning facility right next to the chemical plants in Niagara Falls. Seems like they had a good business in the haydays. Several of those chemical plants have since closed or cut way back. Even though the plants had their own facilities, they sub-ed the work out.

 It always seems like there's room for support industries to keep things moving efficiently. Time consuming jobs are sometimes better sub-ed out. Especially when there's too much to handle. I'm just day dreaming.

and yes, I bet most guys here, would like to play with 1:1 trains!

Third biggest mistake in my life:  my uncle ran the GATX rip track in Ivorydale (P&G), Ohio keeping leased tank cars in revenue service.  On the side, although GATX did not want to do it, his crew also repaired DF box cars.  When he retired, he had hand shake commitments from the N&W, B&O,  C&O, MP, SF, UP, C,B&Q and GATX that he would get their DF repair business if he had a shop in the Cincinnati area.  He had in mind a two track spur west of town and asked me to join him in the business.  I didn't.    John in Lansing, ILL

My Dad was very strict with us. I feared him and he kept it that way. I had a very short leash. My Mom was tough too. She was raised by nuns.

Years later when I was a teen near ready for work (late 70's), he invited a friend's father, our neighbor over who worked for Conrail. My dad knew I liked trains and figured it might be a good direction. So in front of my dad our friend asked if I'd like to go to work on the RR. I quickly turned that offer away.

 I did love trains. I couldn't take my dad's wrath if I messed that up or embarrassed him. I'll always regret, not going that route.
