Can this be used for number board lighting in a diesel hooked direct to track power within.  Running direct off AC track power.

These stats are from the ad on E bay.

3 MM Warm White

Forward Voltage 12V to 18V  1000 OHM Resistor in Series.

AC or DC compatible

Forward Current 20MA / 30MA

Thanks Dave

Lots of answers to this depending on track voltage. If you are running command @18 VAc, might be a little bright but being as they are warm white, shouldn't look too bad. You can connect them directly to track power, but you should put a low power diode in series, in either one of the leads.

If are running conventional you can also hook up directly to track power, but at voltages lower than 10VAC they might look a little dim, and of course it will vary with the voltage. If you are OK with this ,fine.

Others will chime in with other ideas.

If you are doing 2 number boards the leds can be paralleled in reverse polarity then a resister put in series. I was going back and forth with John on converting a sd70’s number board to leds. He recommended a 4.7k resistor with the parallel combo. Actually, works great. Looks good.

In my case Smaller leds then 3mm are needed. As, I want to mount the led’s on the original circuit board where the grain of wheats were located... The 3mm are silently two large.

Thank You Gents for all the replies.

I bought this engine used with no history.  F3 CP early Legacy 2010   6-34582

One of two number board lights were out on both the powered and dummy units.

In the pics you can see the lights and the resistor that was used.....I don't think it is the correct resistor and if so....probably the cause of the failure?

The power and ground were taken from the Program/Run switch (ground) and (power) from the smoke on/off switch.

Wish Lionel would have left the parts site up just so research could be done.

I had on hand the Universal LEDS that Evans sells and installed two so far in this dummy unit.  They work great!

Then I came across the E Bay offering mentioned and wondered about them.

Polarity of course is not a concern, nor is AC / DC when using Evans.  Plug and play.

Is Polarity a concern  using the E Bay product mentioned initially?  Would longevity be better with the Evans lights as opposed to the E Bay product?  Or would it not matter.

Thank You

Dave

Looks like a 1K resistor, plenty for the job.  I don't think that's the cause of the failure.

Thanks for that John.

Not sure what to make of it,  now that I know the resistor was okay.

I've installed Evans lights...universals 7-19 V   AC/DC....in both units.  This should solve things.

Ron A if you are still watching.....was polarity necessary on the light arrangement you used?

Thanks Gents to all who responded.  Much appreciated.

Dave
