I'd love to see if anyone else has built or has ideas for a chocolate factory. I found a Walthers HO kit, but it lacks the "fun" factor and it's HO. With Lionel's Willy Wonka set I thought others may be thinking of similar projects. Ideally, a bit of whimsy and fantasy could make such an industry the focal point of a layout or area.

I really liked the factory portrayed in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with the high smokestacks; and of course there's the Hershey factory in PA for inspiration. In theory, a track siding and/or inside the factory could be track-activated via remote control such that ore cars would release chocolate candies, e.g. Hershey's Kisses, down a hopper and to the front of the layout.

Many years ago I did contracting work at the Blommer Chocolate factory in East Greenville, PA and part of that job involved inspecting all the process equipment. It was amazing how the entire operation worked...at that time most of the equipment had been made in Switzerland, likely patented. Turning cocoa beans into both milk and dark chocolate is an involved process, and the factory stands out in my mind as one of those special memories - and not just because I got to sample the chocolate , which by the way was delicious.

I would imagine a factory that produced on the order of Hersheys or Mars would be more than the typical modeler would want to take on.  One option would be to set up a warehouse where finished products were shipped out to wholesalers, with a lead for other cars delivering items needed to manufacture or package the candy.  The whimsey could come from creating an animated effect or adding signs.

Lots of appropriate buildings to fit a variety of layout sizes, but there's a pair of complementary items that would say it all!...

Hershey

And, Altoona Model Works has a great kit to celebrate those twins!...

For that industrial 'Ole-Factory' experience (Rim-shot, please), add a couple Seuthe smokers and some Mega-Steam "Chocolate" temptation (If Joe is successful in twisting Jeb's arm!), ...and you'll drive everyone in the house crazy!

To sort of synthesize some of the other suggestions, you could do something where, when a button is pushed, smoke units with a hot chocolate scent turn on and pour smoke out the stacks, some "factory sounds" play and lights flash, and then a few Hershey's kisses or fun-sized bars drop down into a tray on the edge of the layout.

That factory dwarfs a significant chunk of his entire layout

I watch a lot of SMT Mainline's videos, many of which concern repair of various (mostly) starter-set grade HO locomotives he either finds as part of Ebay lots or are sent/donated by viewers, in addition to weekly livestreams where he takes requests from the chat to run various pieces from his collection. He does have a small loop of O gauge on a smaller floor layout.

Yes, a full-blown chocolate factory could take a great deal of real estate, however it could also be compressed and still look awesome. I am trying to build the nerve to contact Alan Graziano about such a project, though am not near ready to commit...Lionel's fantasy items via past two catalogs are taking all my train budget!

FWIW, here's a couple of shots of what I've done thus far regarding a chocolate factory and brewery, the latter using multiple Menards structures as some have suggested. By the way, I have many breweries on my layout; beer, candy, and pretzels are very popular in Pretzelvania - the name of my layout

I'm surprised no one mentioned the three prominent chocolate factory silos visible from I-480 in Cleveland that are for Malley's Chocolates.  Google "Malley's Chocolates Brookpark" for photos.  Each silo is 12 x 88 feet, and are labeled appropriately for sugar, milk and cocoa. Supposedly they were going to be actually used to store the raw materials, but that idea was scrapped at some point.

Towards the suggestion for Lionel to make something to go along with their Willy Wonka set...an easy factory would be the operating transfer station - the tooling purchased from MTH. Thus far, Lionel has made this in various names...I purchased the Christmas-themed one. Of course, any Willy Wonka factory would need the oompa loompa figures
