I’m in the stages of building my layout on paper using RR Track; it will be a shelf layout in my basement. This is my first O Scale 2R layout, so there are some things that I’m just not sure about. Minimum main line radius is 72” with #8 turnouts. Part of the layout will be single track, but I do have one area in the yard that will have three tracks making a 90 degree turn. I plan on using 72”, 76” and 80” radius curves which will give me 4” track centers.  I don’t have or plan to run a UP Big Boys but I do have 80’ passenger cars. I made an 8’ beam compass and laid the track centers on a piece of cardboard; there seem to be enough clearance between the cars.

So, to those who have layouts, are 4” track centers OK?

You'll be fine. Even a Big Boy doesn't swing out much on 72" radius. I made an inquiry about a year ago when I was considering building some two-track curve modules at 72"/74" radius and got these photos (this side of the house has been incredibly enlightening). From the look of things, a Big Boy (worst case scenario) on 72" clears a full-sized passenger car by about 3/8".

I remember that thread from a year ago.  I saved your pictures for future reference during my layout build.

Those pictures convinced me to go to the widest radius I could fit.  I have all large UP steam and full length passenger cars, so it only made sense.  Even at 72" radius, the BB had more overhang than I expected!

Thanks again for the pictures.
