I was intrigued by a few posts who because they were born American, were not interested in foreign trains. I am not an American but I have a substantial collection of US trains as well as my English Hornby trains. They both go together very well!

Go figure, huh, Brian? Some folks appear to have a very narrow--and very nationalistic--view of the wide world of railroading and model railroading. But rest assured that not all feel that way.

What if Robert Shaw had killed Sean Connery on that train in From Russia With Love, we might ALL be speaking Russian by now!
Yes, I have 2 of most MTH Euro locos but at least one of all of them, plus ETS and the various Lionel Hogwarts/ Shakespeare express. But I also have more US locos than Euro, I love all trains. Soon, I might even buy an Australian one! No Nationalistic tendencies here!

I have a wind up o scale floor train tinplate Melborne trolley that I am putting Alas IR drive train and guts into. It is next up to the workbench.
If you wanted to do some work and accept some substitutions like I have seen you do with your Hogwarts Repaint and Lionel Thomas' Diesel repaint a Williams J could become a New South Wales Government Railway C38 class with a visit to the paintshop if you overlooked the extra driver set and extra wheel set in the trailer truck. A South Australian 520 class looks alot like a Pennsy T-1.
Yes! We have an English village on the layout, built with British kits bought at UK train shows over the years. We have the 3rd Rail Flying Scotsman, two MTH coaches, and are patiently awaiting the 3rd Rail LNER coaches.

I am tempted also to purchase a LMS steamer and passenger cars from MTH. Although i don't feel MTH is in quite the same league as Lionel, I have found the continental profiles they offer very attractive. When in London I have seen a number of trains from Honrby and Dejan, But the are OO or two rail O. I also think, my opinion only, that MTH has misjudged the market for these European profile trains and will scale back or cease production of them soon, making the present offerings something of a collector item. This is only my opinion, but I must say their trains do look very good. I have collected Lionel NYC items, and LGB from the mid eighties.
audi,
If you want to see some real quality tinplate trains with excellent prices, superb product, and US shipping, check out Darstaed at trainshoover.com. I doubt that MTH's Euro line is going anywhere down soon...they are doing exceptionally well around the world.
As ever,
John

Cute pussycats, our cats do the same thing under our tree, nice photo of some happy kitties, better then some sour pusses around this forum lately.
Once upon a time I thought English trains were too small and funky.
Then I visited Britain and lo! they're not so small close up and many are not funky at all.
In my 16.5mm ga. days I collected a fair number of OO English equipment, principally LMS (and you thought Pennsy vs NYC was parochial). Try telling a GWR fan that LMS locos were better.....
My favorite is the LMS Duchess class 4-6-2 and I'm sore tempted by the MTH model. Unfortunately (?) I have some expensive toys reserved so I'll have to wait for another time.

Not really but those MTH European steamers really look great.

I'd love MTH to do the Class 66. The problem is in what scale...1/43 (for the British), 1/45 (for the Europeans), or 1/48 (for us).

I recently have been bitten by the European bug. First was an MTH Chapelon in green. Then a bunch of ETS trains. Then some ACE and Darstaed trains. As if this wasn't enough I have discovered Marklin Maxi which is One gauge. I'm loving it all.
When I think about it I believe my interest in European trains, especially British rail, began from watching Thomas the Tank Engine with my son.
John.

Yes, since I was 11 YO with a Lima Battery powered German style passenger set. I collected and operated HO European DC for many years. I caught the Marklin bug in 1988 with the Primex Orient Express. Only stopped collecting Marklin after Paul Adams became President. Not that I'm saying he was the cause. It was at that time I had some quality issues with the brand. I still collect European N scale. Primarily Graham Farish British. Their new A1 Peppercorn (Not a Red Robin Hamburger)4-6-2 is a gem.
My only O gauge European so far is the 4 car Paya Orient express.

John, I like you have caught the European train bug. I too started with the MTH Chapelon and then the matching pass car set. Next was Darstaed trains, the coaches are really great. ACE trains and ETS look great but I have not purchased any of those yet. One question, what type of transformer are you using for the ACE / Darstaed trains, DC power?
Thanks, enjoy!
Thanks, enjoy!
I have ridden in many - LOVED it. But when it coems to modeling give me nostalgic Americana!
I did buy the Fleche D' or and the Orient Express. I don't need to go any further..I also have some Fleishmann ho from the mid 60's given to me as a gift.

Well, I was riding on the German ICE this morning - max speed that I saw was 280 kph (a bit under 175 mph). It might have been going faster at times.
Anyway, yes. I have some Pola Maxi and Rivarossi O scale from the '70s and some Marklin HO. One of these days I would like a O gauge Krokadil, and the Mallard steam loco (my namesake).

Went to Menzels Hobby in Dussseldorf today. It is a pretty big store. They had some very cool O gauge trains there. One of the diesels looked somewhat like a double ended EMD cab unit. A couple of nice German steam switchers too, but somewhat more than my budget can handle right now. I also checked out the Marklin offerings. Europe has an amazing variety of electric locomotives. I did pick up a couple of packs of Preiser O people and a couple of beer cars for my Marklin beer train. I may go back again on Saturday.

I have a DC transformer from a G scale train set I use. Some ACE engines have an AC/DC switch and Darstaed will be making engines with the same AC/DC switch for the American market.
John.
I would love to buy a few Euro steamers, but they are too expensive.
European engines in my collection.

Hi Dave:
Yes I love them because they are different from the many steam engines I have. Its nice to rum something that is this different, and the sound is great. Great pictures of your engines and layout.
Take care

I know this is almost heresy, but I am not a real big fan of steam. I have a Big Boy and a Challenger, but my real love is diesels and electrics.
I would really love to see O gauge versions of the TGV, Eurostar, etc.
I was in Europe earlier this year, and to get a bit of a fix, I picked up an HO TGV.
Hopefully, MTH will come out with O gauge versions of some of the high-speed Euro trains.

No more than the average premium US loco!

I have a collection of K.Bay.Sts.B locks and rolling stock, as well as some SBB trains..but it's all HO.
Concerning the O scale.. it will only US trains.. because I can find not only the trains but everything that goes with it, a lot of rolling stock, structures, buildings, signals etc ... and that much more hard to find for the European stuff... (and much much more expensive)

I am into European trains and MTH makes excellent engines as well as cars for the European market. Should be beautiful if a high speed train could be launced by MTH. I have friends who built 4 sets of the German High speed train, ICE in 0 gauge and three of the train sets can be found in Kiel, Germany on their 0 gauge club. An Eurostar should be smashing in 0 gauge.
And I am also in American 0 gauge trains, which are run every Christmas.
However most of the stations, figurs as well as cars are of European brands mostly from Marklin, Kibri and others.
Love to hear if someone else are longing for a High Speed train in 0 gauge. Perhaps MTH can make the American Acela, that should be nice.

Good to hear from you bagelius, many of us also like European trains. I love European, British and American.
If MTH make a Acela, perhaps they can get it to work reliably. Lionel made one a few years back but had many problems.
Let us see your pictures of any European model trains please!

I posted these O scale locos on my German hobbyshop thread too, but in case you missed it:
The neatest looking high speed train I saw there was a Thalys, sorry I don't have a pic.

I have many American beautiful engines and now I am waiting to receive 3 European Swiss Crocodile Electric engines, 2 in green and 1 in brown livery, which I bought 2 years ago. Should be delivered in february 2012 MTH says. Add on some Orient express passenger cars and I shall be happy.
I do really wait for the british streamlined steam engine the A4. Hopefully MTH will make the A4 steamlined steam engine and then I buy some of them. They had when they were alive on the british rails painted in black, in green, in blue and in silver. If MTH releases the A4 I will buy 4 of them at least. And add some nice British passenger cars. Thank you for this site.

I like watching trains from anywhere in the world, but I only buy American prototype steam locomotives. I'm kinda glad there has been nothing for me to buy. I've had a lot more $ for other things.
all of this is my own thoughts out loud
this is good I am ENGLISH and I do not care what type of Toy Trains
I run on my track on the carpet
,both Christine and I like your Lionel and Mth Trains
I would never be so bold as to say I was born in ENGLAND / USA/or any other Country and I'm sticking to only the Toy Trains of my Country
I see that a good few have the Hogwarts Steam Set.
I am very happy that Lionel made it and I to have one, because it looks like the type of trains we as young lads saw.
back to where Trains were made Hornby was also made in your Country,
along with other makes as some one said.
I suppose it's a matter of how much the Train costs
and is it worth paying that amount of money these days
( I do wish that Lionel had made some more UK rolling stock)
un till about 10 years ago I had never herd of 3 Rail Lionel or Mth Trains
that run A/C.

Yes, in particular, British steam. My favorite book is Great Days of the Country Railway and I have copies of all the original Thomas videos - I love British Marx and Lionel's Thomas line... I hope MTH continues this production...
