I recently purchased this Atlas TMCC locomotive.  After reading the instruction manual, I removed the body to install the battery (which was supplied in the packaging).  And I cannot find anything that resembles a 9v battery connector.

Those of you more seasoned Atlas runners, "what is going on here?"

Atlas RS 1 had the battery in the fuel tank along with the speaker. It had an interesting side door access.  I have a couple of Atlas SD35's with vertical install mother board as pictured and the battery was to the rear of the unit between the back motor and the end of the unit.

This Atlas GP 35 diagram shows the battery bracket and the plug-in battery terminal. Again it is difficult from the exploded view to figure where all is to be.

The battery connects negative to frame common and positive to pin 13 of the RailSounds Power Supply.

If you use an ohmmeter to ring out the unused pins on the group of connectors indicated below to pin 13 of the RS-Power socket, you will almost surely find the pin next to it as frame ground.  That's where the battery connector goes.

This is not the unit pictured.  Early Atlas SD35 model.  Note that some of these models were before the R2LC 08 control boards.

Battery bracket rear of unit.

Battery lead(s) is/are part of a (4) pin modular connector.

Red and black wires, same connector as the (2) purple wires.

Modular connector marked J10.

Again, this is not the unit pictured.  Atlas SD35 with a similar TMCC board.

The picture sure seems to show standard RS4 boards.

There were differences in the R2LC boards.  I had to reverse different mark light wiring on the SD 35 pictured, to get them to work with and R2LC08. I noted some Dolphin telephone connectors in this unit relating to the marker lights.   Discussion was board R2LC 06/07 or earlier, it's been a long time.

O.K.

I'm seeing a red lead on the J10 terminal in his picture. Possibly a black lead and the battery is in the fuel tank area?? The two smaller leads appear to work the headlights/marker lights in the shell. That corresponds to the two purple leads, my picture.

I want to thank you wonderful guys for the help you provide to everyone.  This hobby would be a lot less fun without you.

For future reference...let the record show that the 9v battery is not under the long hood like page 7 of the owner's manual states.  It is inside the fuel tank.       And that is fine, except Atlas literature caused me to sweat blood while my worn-out rancher hands tried not to destroy this model while trying to remove the long hood and install a battery.  None of this stuff is easy for me.  Then when we actually find where the battery goes, a BCR is every-so-slightly bigger than a stock 9v and it won't fit (1st picture).  Some fine day, I will have to do this again because a BCR will not fit.  The 2nd picture shows the misguided book, and the 3rd shows the box with model number.

Maybe all of this will save some grief to future modelers and technicians.

I really like Atlas products, I have a lot of them.  But I have had several moments with them which causes the Texan in me to wish I could metaphorically grab them by one arm and kick their a** in a continuous circle until they can get things right.

The Atlas lit says a battery is for continuation of Railsounds after throttle voltage is shut down in conventional mode.  And a battery is not necessary for TMCC operation.  I run conventional only.

I posted a question months ago about using BCRs in Atlas locos, and nobody was willing to offer a definitive answer.  Now I understand that the circuitry doesn't have the ability to charge a BCR in the first place.

They do make a BCR module for Lionel RS systems.  I have not used them, so you might want to search the manufactures web site to see the size and if it would fit in this specific model.
