Recently my good friend Emile posted photos of his new Base Unit for a 1st Addition Lionel Grand Central Terminal. I wrote to him and commented how much it added to this beautiful Lionel structure. His photos sparked an interest in my adding a Base Unit for my 1st Addition Lionel GCT. Emile was kind enough to share with me the price he paid as well as what the materials cost. Later that day, like many of you, I received an offer to purchase this same Base Unit for a significantly higher amount. I do understand business very well and have no issue with a company setting a price that they believe is fair and achievable. I also understand that there could be better options for me to obtain a Base Unit for my Lionel GCT.

My next step was to study photos of the 1 to 1 Grand Central Terminal. The more I looked at these photos, the more I liked the idea of adding a Base Unit to mine. So I called my good friend Harry Heike who has done wonderful projects for me in the past and asked him what he thought about the idea. To my surprise, he was intimately familiar with the base off the GCT and had seriously considered doing such a project in the past to the extent that he had drawn a set of plans for a model. He readily agreed to create a unique Base Unit for my GCT which will be highly detailed. And, I was very pleasantly surprised that my efforts to seek other options have paid off big time with a terrific price. This also reinforces my belief that if you have a little voice that keeps telling you to consider other options, you should listen.

Harry has told me that he would be happy to build other base units for those who own the Lionel 1st Addition GCT, and when I told him about the smaller Version 2 Lionel GCT, he was very interested in perusing this project as well. He did ask my help in finding an owner of a version 2 GCT who would be willing to ship their unit to him for study purposes so that the final product would be a perfect fit. He has agreed to pay shipping both ways and only needs the GCT for a few days. This may be an excellent opportunity for all those who have the smaller version of the GCT to have their own affordable highly detailed Base Unit. If you are interested in helping, just contact Harry or me and I will get the information on to Harry.

I am sure you are all aware that Harry Heike is a proud sponsor of both our OGR Forum and Magazine. I don’t know about you, but as far as I am concerned, when given a choice, I will go out of my way to support a Forum sponsor with my business compared to those who are not sponsors or advertisers for the OGR family of services. Obtaining a Base Unit for my GCT was another excellent opportunity to say thank you to a Forum sponsor.

Stay tuned, this should be a very interesting project. I will post progress photos as they become available.

Update December 12th:

A Forum member has come forward and is sending their Version 2 of the GCT to Harry in order that the new base unit will fit perfectly. Thanks so much to GS.

Update December 13th:

Harry tells me that he will have a prototype of the Version II GCT available for photos before Christmas. Great news!!!!!! The price will be available at that time and he also tells me you will not be disappointed with it.

Brian,

That is fantastic news! Beside being a Forum Sponsor, Harry Heike is a real Artist! I have a number of Heike buildings and they look great on my layout. The MG Switch Tower he created for the Lionel Artisan Collection a couple years ago is actually my favorite building of all. This year I am adding The Heike Repair shop that I’m presenting as a North Pole Paint Shop. That will be the place in my Christmas Village where the Polar Express goes to get painted Gold. It was a kit and I am not a good modeler, but it turned out to be very easy and I had a lot of fun building it.  I know Harry is going to do an amazing base for the Grand Central Terminal.

I also think it’s fantastic that he might build a base for the small version of the Grand Central Terminal. Perhaps he would consider building a Heike version of the small Grand Central Terminal in addition to the base and sell them as a set. That would make it easier to match colors and dimensions.

Frankly, I think the small Lionel GCT could use a do-over. The proportions are really odd and the watch stuck to the front in place of a clock just looks weird. It seemed more like a decent first draft that got rushed to market. The catalogue pictures seem OK, but in person, it looks like one of those old mantel clocks. It’s just not very impressive.

A Forum member has come forward and is sending his Version II of the Lionel GCT to Harry. This will insure that the new base will fit perfectly.

This should be a hot new product as there are many Version II's out there. Nice that Harry is willing to take on this project.

Stay tuned.

I agree with Passenger Train Collector in making it a priority to support OGR forum sponsors when ever I can.  I believe the key words here are "fair pricing" and up front and honest advertising.  I hate it when I see the words posting a great deal when I think an item is priced way above what fair pricing should be.  Mr. Heike has a reputation of creating fine work and I'm sure he will follow through on this project in spectacular tradition.  This GCT base will be nothing less than another work of art by Harry.  My hat's off to Brian in pursuing this great addition to our hobby.

Steve, Lady and Tex

He could also market it to us younger folks as the Hall of Justice!
The cartoon home of Superman, Batman, and the gang was taken directly from CUT, always new good guys hung around trains.

Good to know Brain, I've tried a couple times to gain the attention of the folks who have built so many of the wonderful stations, didn't seem like they had much interest, but said I was not the first to inquire about having it built. Perhaps when I have a billion or two to play with we can talk

I agree, this would be an excellent choice for Harry. I would find room for one. Harry had talked before about doing a special train station and this would a good one.

"Please give us a price & time line when you get it. Thank you."

Joe, as soon as Harry receives the model of the GCT so that he can draw an accurate plan, he will set a price and delivery time. One thing for sure, I mentioned to Harry that the price must be reasonable as folks are not necessarily looking for a steal-of-a-deal, but something that is very affordable. I will keep you and the other Forum members abreast.

Jason, what a great station prospect. I am sure Harry would love to do this one.

Jason, sure will as soon as I get back from Church today, I will send you Harry's contact information.

Forrest, Harry did a set of plans for a Base Unit for Lionel some time ago, but the project never got off the ground. So he has a giant head start on doing one now. I shared with him that it was my opinion that there was a good market for a Base Unit for both versions of the GCT at an AFFORDABLE PRICE POINT.

You bet, Angelo. Every day this project is becoming more and more exciting. It looks like Harry is going to be one busy fellow.

Lionel and Harry have teamed up on several very successful projects. What is making this project so interesting is Harry is very familiar with the 1 to 1 GCT, so he understands the scope of the project and wants to produce a very realistic model.

Kevin, I will keep track of your interest and as soon as Harry is ready with photos and pricing, one of us will be in touch with you.

So far, I have received inquiries about the Version II from 17 Forum members, and for the larger Version I, four. And this is just from a brief description of these projects. I would say there is substantial interest out their for Harry's new projects.

I was talking to Harry about his next ad today for the magazine and he touched briefly with me on what he thinks his pricing will be on both the large and small bases.  I can't share that with you right now as Harry has just a few more details to take care of....but....I will tell you that you will be VERY pleased...
