Bells, whistle, lights, but no movement

Start with the easy stuff, do the standard TMCC reset.  That would be to program the ID and feature codes as follows.

• Kill power to the track
• Switch RUN/PGM to PGM
• Apply power to the track
• Press ENG, #, SET
• Press AUX1
• Press 4
• Kill power to the track
• Switch RUN/PGM to RUN
• Apply power to the track

See if that changes anything.  If not, describe exactly the current conditions, i.e. is the whistle and bell still functional from the remote?

Thank you. I tried resetting, but it didn't really work. I'd used the manual and used 43 after pressing Aux 1. The engine moved about 4 or 5 feet and then stopped. The whistle then began blowing and went for 15 seconds, then stopped, and started again. When the pause occurred, I could control the whistle. I  noticed that if I turned the throttle during that pause, the whistle started up again, but I had no movement. I could not turn off the whistle. I've tried re-programming using just 4 (not 43), but the only change was that the throttle would turn off the whistle, but still no movement. I've cleaned the track as well. BTW, when wiring, I used the single wire technique, but I wonder if I shouldn't have connected the wire to both outside rails.

Too quick on the send ... I do have control of the bell and the lights remain on.

The track signal is not an issue.

Does the engine move a few feet the first time you try to run?  If you press the ® key on the Legacy CAB2, can you run it a few feet again?

It is possible the motor leads are grounding to chassis.  This can account for the motion and also induce a DC offset that triggers the whistle.  Maybe solder joint were motor leads connect to motor are touching the can.  G

It doesn't move at all when I first turn it on; I just get the whistle and lights. Interestingly, I can't get to the reset key. In fact, I can't get past the numeric keypad. I just upgraded my Legacy to v 1.3 (I've had it since before I retired); I'll reload it and see if that makes a difference. BTW, thank you for all your help.

Hit the INFO key on the CAB2, then the SCROLL key to move over to the control type, select TMCC and then press INFO again.  You'll have the keypad icons.

For CAB1 numbers, just hit AUX1-0 and you get the reset as well.

Just curious, why not upgrade to 1.52 for the Legacy system?  A lot of stuff has been added and fixed.

Well, the good news is that I was able to get to the reset key. The bad news is that it didn't do much, although I got Crew Talk for the first time and was able to shut down the engine with the remote. (I'm beginning to hate that whistle.)

As for v 1.52, I didn't know it existed. I contacted Lionel shortly before Christmas and v1.3 is what they sent.

At this point, I suspect you'll have to have someone look at it, or open it up yourself.

Yeah, I think you're correct. I'm pretty unhappy with the speaker, too. The sound quality isn't good - a whole lot of static.

I guess it's time to unwrap the MR S3. It's never been out of the box. I wonder what surprises are in store for me with it. But gotta think happy thoughts.
