Hi All,

I just had someone new to trains (with a new / old engine) ask me if they make a "kit" to replace the original 3 position E-Unit to electronics since he found the buzzing to be disconcerting...

I've done this before with spare parts and I've done it as part of an ERR upgrade to TMCC but never for a straight fwd E-Unit to board effort.  What would be your suggestions as a good method for a novice to replace his 3 pos E-Unit with a board?   Does someone make such a kit?  He does not live near me so I will not be able to assist in the conversion.  He would like to do it himself with his son as a father-son project...

Open as always to your ideas & suggestions!

S/F & H/H Mike

I first used a Dallee electronic E-unit way back in the '80s in a Lionel C&O switcher.  I had a smaller layout at the time and was using the switcher to locate operating cars at various accessories throughout the layout.  I was very pleased with the performance of the loco once the E-unit was installed.  First the quietness compared to the original technical e-unit and second the loco ran smoother, so spotting cars was a bit easier.

Mike, You do have the option of using an ERR board for the reversing unit in this, without the  TMCC Command Base it will operate as a standard reverse unit with the bonus if he goes to TMCC/Legacy he has TMCC in the engine. Electric Rail Road also supplies very good installation instructions with their products.

I like the Dallee solution as it likely comes with directions and needed cables but you could also use a Lionel unit. Below is the board used in their Conventional Classic Pulmore motored engines. In addition you would need a heat sink (easily fabricated) and cables ( less easy to fabricate without the proper tools). Might be an option for someone with a lot of engines to convert and the time to wait for Lionel's half off parts sale.
