Best method to convert old E-Unit to electronic board???

I'll second Dan's recommendation for using a Dallee unit. I have one in a Lionel # 8376 UP SD40 that replaced a failed "Liontech" unit from 1986(?). It still works flawlessly.

I first used a Dallee electronic E-unit way back in the '80s in a Lionel C&O switcher.  I had a smaller layout at the time and was using the switcher to locate operating cars at various accessories throughout the layout.  I was very pleased with the performance of the loco once the E-unit was installed.  First the quietness compared to the original technical e-unit and second the loco ran smoother, so spotting cars was a bit easier.

Mike, You do have the option of using an ERR board for the reversing unit in this, without the  TMCC Command Base it will operate as a standard reverse unit with the bonus if he goes to TMCC/Legacy he has TMCC in the engine. Electric Rail Road also supplies very good installation instructions with their products.

Will these boards (the AC version), work in older Lionel post war engines? I have a couple with very loud e-units that I would love to replace. The buzzing drives me crazy so I usually turn them off and on as needed.

Yes, these boards will work in the early post war locomotives, the AC Commander is rated at 8 amps and I have used these in Gilbert twin motored PAs with no problems.

You can also add a rectifier to the e unit from the hot wire to the e unit. It quiets the e unit down considerably.

I like the Dallee solution as it likely comes with directions and needed cables but you could also use a Lionel unit. Below is the board used in their Conventional Classic Pulmore motored engines. In addition you would need a heat sink (easily fabricated) and cables ( less easy to fabricate without the proper tools). Might be an option for someone with a lot of engines to convert and the time to wait for Lionel's half off parts sale.
